The Taylors & Company Schofield .45 LC revolver in 7" barrel with charcoal case hardened finish brings the legendary break-top action to the modern shooter. Originally engineered by Major George Schofield for cavalry soldiers who needed to reload and fire from horseback with one hand, this top-break design remains one of the most elegant and functional revolver mechanisms ever devised. The thumb-operated barrel latch is intuitive and fast—pull it back, the frame tips open, and all six spent cases eject at once. It's a timeless system that still works as well today as it did in the 1870s.
The charcoal case hardened finish on this Schofield is where the aesthetic appeal really shines. You're getting a forged steel frame with color case hardening (bright colors right out of the box), paired with a charcoal blue barrel and cylinder. This finish is deliberately delicate—it's designed to patina naturally over time and use, gradually softening into a beautiful grey tone. Unlike modern industrial finishes, the charcoal blue develops character and a lived-in look that collectors and working shooters appreciate. The two-piece walnut grip feels substantial in hand and suits the revolver's balanced, purposeful profile.
At 12.75" overall and 2.97 lbs, the Schofield carries and handles naturally—serious enough for .45 LC ballistics, nimble enough to be genuinely useful in the field. Simple fixed sights (blade front, notch rear on the barrel latch) keep the gun clean and reliable, no adjustments to fuss with. Whether you're into black powder competitions, Cowboy Action Shooting, historical reenactment, or just appreciate classic revolver engineering, the Schofield is a rig that earns its place in any collection.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the charcoal blue finish and how will it look over time?
Charcoal blue is an over-oxidized bluing that arrives bright blue from the factory. With regular use and handling, it naturally patinas to a softer grey tone. This aging process takes considerable time but creates a distinctive, character-filled appearance that many shooters and collectors prefer over modern finishes.
Is the Schofield suitable for Cowboy Action Shooting?
Yes. The break-top mechanism, fixed sights, walnut grip, and .45 LC chambering make the Schofield a popular choice for Cowboy Action Shooting competitions where historically accurate revolvers are desired.
Can I operate the Schofield with one hand?
The design was engineered to allow one-handed operation, particularly the barrel latch, which opens with a thumb pull. This made it ideal for mounted cavalry, though modern use typically involves two-handed handling for safety and control.
What sights come with this revolver?
The Schofield features simple fixed sights: a blade front sight and a rear sight notch located on the barrel latch itself. These are basic but functional sights with no windage or elevation adjustments.
