The Taylors & Company 1873 Sporting Rifle in .45 LC is a faithful reproduction of one of America's most storied lever-action designs—the rifle that won the West and remains a favorite among hunters, sport shooters, and collectors who appreciate authentic American firearms. This 30-inch octagon barrel rifle combines historical character with practical performance, chambered in the forgiving .45 LC cartridge that's as comfortable on the range as it is in the field.

Built on the proven 1873 action, this rifle handles like a dream in your hands. The 13-round magazine keeps you in the game without constant reloading, while the checkered walnut furniture provides both durability and a classic look that only improves with use. The case-hardened frame and blued barrel create that distinctive two-tone finish that defined the era, and the pistol grip stock offers a modern ergonomic touch while honoring the rifle's heritage. At 8.7 pounds and 49 inches overall, it balances well enough for a day in the field or a session at the range.

The buckhorn rear sight and blade front sight combo is straightforward and effective—no batteries, no complications. This 1873 Sporting Rifle thrives as a versatile lever-action for hunting medium game, recreational shooting, cowboy action competitions, or as the centerpiece of any serious lever-gun collection. If you're drawn to classic rifles that actually work hard, not just hang on a wall, this one deserves a close look.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the 1873 lever-action good for—hunting, sport shooting, or both?

The 1873 Sporting Rifle is versatile enough for all three. In .45 LC, it's a solid choice for hunting medium game at reasonable distances, works perfectly for recreational range time, and is popular in cowboy action shooting competitions. The 13-round capacity and reliable action make it practical for sport use, while the octagon barrel and open sights give you the accuracy you need in the field.

Is .45 LC ammunition readily available and affordable?

Yes. The .45 Colt (LC) is one of the most widely available cartridges in America—you'll find it at any firearms retailer. It's been in production since 1873, so supply is consistent and pricing is reasonable compared to many modern calibers.

Can I use modern scopes or rail systems on this rifle?

The 1873 Sporting Rifle ships with buckhorn and blade iron sights. Mounting modern optics to a lever-action reproduction typically requires aftermarket rail systems or gunsmithing; we'd recommend consulting with a qualified gunsmith about your specific mounting goals and whether modifications are right for your rifle.

What does "case-hardened frame" mean, and why does it matter?

Case hardening is a heat-treatment process that makes the exterior surface of the frame much harder and more wear-resistant than the interior, which remains slightly softer for durability and shock resistance. It's both historically accurate to the original 1873 Winchester and functionally superior to a fully hardened frame—it resists wear from cycling the action while being less brittle. The blued barrel and case-hardened frame also create that distinctive two-tone appearance collectors and shooters prize.
