The Taurus Raging Hunter 5.12" .44 Mag revolver is a large-frame, six-shot handgun purpose-built for hunters who need serious stopping power in a short- to medium-range field gun. This oxide-finished revolver earned the 2019 American Hunter Handgun of the Year Golden Bullseye Award—recognition that reflects its blend of practical innovation and rugged reliability. If you're after a powerful revolver that balances control, speed, and durability for hunting applications, this is a legitimate contender.

The Raging Hunter's design philosophy centers on managing the recoil and blast inherent to .44 Magnum power. Its factory-tuned porting and gas expansion chamber work together to reduce muzzle lift, which means faster, more accurate follow-up shots in the field—critical when hunting. The angular barrel profile cuts weight without sacrificing the strength needed for the round, while the cushioned insert grips are engineered to absorb recoil and maintain control through multiple shots. A fixed front sight and adjustable rear sight give you the adjustment range necessary for various hunting distances.

Built on Taurus's large frame, this revolver delivers the capacity (six rounds) and ergonomics you'd expect from a serious hunting sidearm. The double/single-action trigger provides flexibility for both deliberate aimed shots and faster hammer-cocked work if circumstances demand it. A transfer bar safety ensures the gun won't fire if dropped. At just under 49 ounces and 10.9 inches overall, it's substantial enough to handle .44 Magnum pressures but still manageable for extended field carry.

Whether you're hunting hogs, deer, or other game where a revolver makes sense, or you simply prefer the reliability and simplicity of a wheel gun at the range, the Raging Hunter delivers performance without pretense.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the .44 Magnum best used for?

The .44 Magnum is a powerful hunting round suitable for short- to medium-range applications on larger game. It's also popular for handgun hunting where rifle hunting isn't permitted, and for hunters who prefer the simplicity and reliability of a revolver platform.

Is this revolver good for hunting?

Yes. The Raging Hunter was specifically designed for hunting applications and won the 2019 American Hunter Handgun of the Year award. Its 5.12" barrel, adjustable sights, porting design for reduced recoil, and six-round capacity make it practical for field hunting scenarios.

What does the transfer bar safety do?

The transfer bar is a mechanical safety that prevents the revolver from firing if dropped or knocked hard. The firing pin only contacts the transfer bar when the trigger is deliberately pulled, adding a layer of protection during carry and use.

How does the porting reduce recoil?

The factory-tuned porting system and gas expansion chamber direct some of the expanding gases upward, counteracting muzzle rise. This reduces the felt recoil impulse and helps the gun settle faster between shots, improving accuracy and control—especially important in a .44 Magnum revolver.
