The Mossberg 590 7-shot 20-gauge pump-action shotgun has earned its reputation the hard way—through decades of real-world service with military units and law enforcement agencies worldwide. That combat pedigree translates directly to home defense reliability when it matters most. This 18.5" barreled 20ga delivers the rapid-fire capability of a proven platform in a compact, maneuverable package ideal for close-quarters scenarios, whether you're protecting your home or securing your property.

Built on the same mechanical foundation that's seen global duty, the 590 combines traditional pump-action simplicity with thoughtful design details. The receiver is drilled and tapped for optics or mounting accessories. A top-mounted ambidextrous safety means you can operate the gun effectively from either shoulder without repositioning your hand. Dual extractors, steel-to-steel lockup, twin action bars, and an anti-jam elevator keep the gun running when speed counts. The clean-out magazine tube design simplifies maintenance—a practical advantage if you're counting on this gun for defense rather than just range time.

At 18.5 inches, this 590 balances firepower with handling in tight spaces. The 7-shot capacity gives you a serious on-board magazine without excessive weight. If you're building a home defense battery and value a shotgun with a documented track record, the Mossberg 590 20-gauge pump delivers performance that's been proven under pressure, not just promised in marketing copy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Mossberg 590 20-gauge good for home defense?

Yes. The 590 has been used by military and law enforcement for decades, specifically because it's reliable under stress. The 20-gauge reduces recoil compared to a 12-gauge, helping you stay on target and shoot faster in a home defense scenario. The compact 18.5" barrel makes it easier to maneuver indoors.

Can I mount a scope or red dot on this shotgun?

Yes. The receiver is drilled and tapped, so you can add optics or other accessories using standard mounting hardware.

What does "anti-jam elevator" and "twin action bars" mean?

These are mechanical features that reduce malfunctions and stoppages. The twin action bars (parallel support rails beneath the bolt) and the anti-jam elevator (which feeds shells into the chamber) work together to minimize jamming during rapid fire—critical in a defense scenario where a stoppage is unacceptable.

How many rounds does it hold?

The 590 is a 7-shot shotgun, meaning it holds 7 rounds in the magazine tube, plus one in the chamber for a total of 8 rounds ready to fire.
