The Mossberg Maverick 88 Cruiser 20ga pump action shotgun is a compact, no-frills workhorse built for shooters who need reliable performance in a handy package. With an 18.5\" barrel and a synthetic pistol-grip stock, this 20-gauge delivers the recoil-friendliness of a lighter gauge without sacrificing the versatility you expect from a modern pump shotgun. At just over 5 pounds and 31 inches overall, it's maneuverable enough for tight spaces—whether you're home defense-minded, breaking in a new shooter, or after a compact gun for the truck. The 6-shot capacity (5 in the magazine plus 1 in the chamber) gives you practical firepower, and the cylinder bore choke and bead sight keep things straightforward: point, shoot, move. Mossberg's Maverick line has earned its reputation for honest, dependable engineering, and this Cruiser variant strips away extras to focus on what matters—a shotgun that runs when you need it.

The 20-gauge platform is underrated for a lot of jobs. Yes, it's lighter than 12-gauge, but that cuts recoil without crippling performance, making it genuinely comfortable for extended shooting or for anyone who hasn't shot much before. The synthetic furniture shrugs off weather and handling, and the blued barrel and black stock don't pretend to be fancy—they're built to work. Pump actions are inherently reliable: short action cycle, proven mechanics, no batteries or moving parts to foul up.

If you want a shotgun that does one job well and does it every time, and you're not paying for features you won't use, the Maverick 88 Cruiser deserves a hard look. It's the kind of gun that makes sense in a working person's safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What shells does the Maverick 88 Cruiser shoot?

The Cruiser is chambered in 3" 20-gauge, so it will handle any 20-gauge ammunition you find—2.75" or 3" loads work fine.

Is a pistol-grip shotgun good for home defense or general use?

The pistol grip on the Cruiser gives you a more instinctive handling position and faster target transitions in close quarters. It does change your mechanics compared to a traditional stock, so spend time with it at the range to find what works for you.

Can I add a longer barrel or modify this shotgun?

Mossberg shotguns are known for aftermarket support—barrels, stocks, and other parts are available from multiple suppliers. Check your local laws on any modifications before purchasing.

Why choose 20-gauge over 12-gauge?

The 20-gauge gives you less recoil and less muzzle blast, making it easier to shoot accurately and comfortably, especially over long sessions. It's still plenty effective for home defense, hunting upland game, and general sport shooting.
