The Henry Side Gate .38-55 Win lever action rifle bridges classic American gunsmithing with practical, modern features. Built on the proven Henry lever-action platform, this rifle chambers the potent .38-55 Winchester—a storied cartridge favored by hunters pursuing deer and elk at reasonable ranges, typically effective to about 125 yards. The 20-inch round blued steel barrel keeps the gun handy in the field without sacrificing velocity, and the 1:18 twist rate stabilizes period-correct .38-55 loads reliably. At 7.5 pounds with a 38.3-inch overall length, it balances quick handling with the heft needed for clean, controlled shots.

What sets this rifle apart is the side gate loading mechanism—a feature that harks back to lever-gun tradition while proving faster and more intuitive than loading through the tube. The polished brass receiver gives it unmistakable character, while the American walnut furniture and brass buttplate complete a rifle that looks as good as it shoots. The transfer bar safety keeps the gun secure on the carry or in the truck. A set of fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sights with diamond insert pairs with a ramp front sight topped by a .062 ivory bead, giving you quick target acquisition whether you're working brush or glassing open timber.

Scope-ready from the factory with drilled and tapped Weaver 63B mounts, the Henry accepts modern glass if you want to extend your range—or run it iron-sighted and enjoy the nimble, instinctive feel of a true lever gun. Swivel studs are fitted for a sling. The five-round capacity covers most hunting scenarios without weighing you down. Whether you're drawn to the .38-55 for its history, its ballistics in medium brush, or simply because it shoots different, this Henry delivers the reliability and fit-and-finish you expect from the brand. A rifle built to hunt, target shoot, and collect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Henry Side Gate .38-55 good for hunting deer and elk?

Yes. The .38-55 Winchester is a capable medium-game cartridge, and this rifle is built for hunting deer and elk. Its effective range is typically around 125 yards, so it works best for hunters who can close distance or hunt terrain where longer shots are unlikely. The rifle's light weight and fast-handling lever action make it ideal for timber hunting or areas with brush.

Can I mount a scope on this rifle?

Yes. The receiver is drilled and tapped for Weaver 63B scope mounts, so you can add glass if you choose. The rifle also shoots very well with the factory adjustable iron sights, and many lever-gun hunters prefer to run them open for speed and reliability.

What's included with the rifle?

The rifle ships as a complete, ready-to-hunt unit with iron sights, sling swivel studs, and the side gate loading mechanism installed. It does not include a scope or other accessories—just the rifle itself.

What makes the side gate loading different from a traditional tube-fed lever gun?

The side gate allows you to load ammunition directly into the magazine from the side of the receiver, rather than feeding rounds one at a time through the loading tube under the barrel. It's faster, more intuitive, and appeals to shooters who want the benefits of a lever action with easier, more practical feeding.
