The Winchester XPR Thumbhole Varmint SR in .243 Winchester is a purpose-built rifle for shooters who spend serious time behind the glass hunting varmints or honing accuracy at the range. The thumbhole stock with raised cheekpiece locks you into a consistent, repeatable shooting position—critical when you're stretching shots across open country or dialing in tight groups. Built on a proven bolt-action platform with Winchester's M.O.A. trigger system, this rifle gives you the precision mechanics and ergonomics that separate consistent hits from close misses.

The .243 Winchester cartridge remains one of the most sensible choices for varmint hunting and target work: flat trajectory, minimal recoil, and enough velocity to deliver clean, fast kills on coyotes, prairie dogs, and similar game. The XPR's free-floating barrel and recessed target crown are engineered to maximize accuracy potential, while the matte blued steel receiver and barrel resist shine and glare in bright conditions. Gray laminate furniture is tough, stable across temperature swings, and proven in the field—no fancy finish, just durable.

Details matter on a rifle you'll rely on. The bolt carries a nickel Teflon coating for smooth, corrosion-resistant operation, and the two-position thumb safety keeps the rifle ready or secured without fumbling. The receiver is drilled and tapped for standard scope mounting, so you can mount glass quickly. Dual sling swivel studs on the forearm give you shooting-position flexibility, and a thread protector secures the muzzle until you're ready to shoot. This isn't a rifle chasing trends—it's a working tool built to deliver accuracy when it counts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Winchester XPR Thumbhole Varmint SR best used for?

This rifle is purpose-built for varmint hunting and precision target shooting. The .243 Winchester offers flat trajectory and minimal recoil, making it ideal for hunting coyotes, prairie dogs, and similar game out to moderate distances. The thumbhole stock, free-floating barrel, and target crown are all engineered for accuracy—whether you're taking a first shot at distance or practicing at the range.

Is the receiver ready for a scope?

Yes. The receiver is drilled and tapped for standard scope mounting, so you can mount optics without any gunsmithing. A quality variable scope in 3–9x or 4–12x magnification is a popular pairing for this rifle and caliber combination.

What's included with the rifle?

The Winchester XPR Thumbhole Varmint SR ships with a thread protector on the muzzle and sling swivel studs already installed on the forearm. A scope, rings, ammunition, and sling are not included and must be purchased separately.

How does the thumbhole stock help accuracy?

The thumbhole design with raised cheekpiece locks your head and shoulder into a consistent, repeatable position every time you shoulder the rifle. This consistency is critical for accurate shooting—it reduces variables between shots and helps you dial in tight groups whether you're hunting or practicing at distance.
