The Winchester 70 Featherweight in .270 WSM is a classic short-action rifle built for hunters who refuse to compromise between power and portability. This is the real deal—a purpose-built mountain and field rifle that weighs just 7 pounds, making it genuinely packable for all-day hunts without the fatigue. The .270 WSM cartridge delivers magnum-class performance in a compact platform, giving you flat trajectory and serious downrange energy without the bulk or recoil of a full-length magnum action.
Winchester's Featherweight line has earned its reputation through generations of hunters, and this .270 WSM iteration carries that legacy forward. The 24-inch barrel is the sweet spot for velocity and handling in this caliber—you get the ballistics you need without an unwieldy profile in thick brush or tight country. The satin stock finish and brushed-polish barrel give it a refined, practical appearance that looks equally at home in a truck rack or a backcountry camp. At 44.25 inches overall, it's genuinely compact; the 13.75-inch length of pull fits most shooters comfortably without requiring aftermarket adjustment.
This is a serious rifle for serious hunting. The short action is mechanically faster and tighter than long-action designs, the three-round magazine feeds reliably, and the 1-in-10 twist stabilizes the .270 WSM's bullet range without compromise. If you hunt elk, mule deer, or any mid-to-large game where you need efficiency and accuracy in a rifle you'll actually carry all day, the Winchester 70 Featherweight in .270 WSM deserves a hard look.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the .270 WSM and why choose it?
The .270 Winchester Short Magnum is a high-velocity cartridge that delivers magnum-class energy in a short-action platform. It's effective on elk, mule deer, and other mid-to-large game at extended ranges, with a flatter trajectory than standard .270 Winchester while keeping recoil manageable and the rifle light and handy.
Is this rifle suitable for long-range hunting?
Yes. The .270 WSM's velocity and the Winchester 70's reputation for accuracy make this a solid long-range hunting platform. The 1-in-10 twist stabilizes the bullet weights commonly used in this cartridge, and the short action provides a reliable, mechanically tight foundation for precision shooting.
Will this rifle fit a standard rifle sling or scope mount?
The Winchester 70 Featherweight accepts standard Winchester 70 bases and rings, and it will work with any quality hunting sling. We recommend confirming scope mount compatibility with your chosen rings, as with any rifle platform.
What's the typical use case for a rifle this light?
At 7 pounds, this is purpose-built for hunters who cover serious ground—mountain elk hunts, backcountry deer stalks, or any hunt where you'll carry the rifle all day. The weight savings pay dividends in fatigue and accuracy over the course of a long hunt, though lighter rifles do inherently recoil more than heavier ones.
