The Taylors & Company Open Top 1860 Army .38 Spl revolver is a historically inspired cartridge-conversion sixgun built for shooters who appreciate classic Colt designs with modern caliber practicality. This late-model interpretation captures the look and feel of an iconic American revolver while chambering .38 Special—a round that balances shootability, availability, and mild recoil. Whether you're into Cowboy Action competition, historical reenactment, or just want a smooth-handling sixgun with genuine character, the Open Top delivers nostalgia without sacrificing function.

Built on a forged frame with case-hardened finish and blue barrel, this revolver wears its heritage authentically. The Army-sized grip and steel backstrap feel substantial and balanced in the hand. Sights are straightforward—a blade front and rear sight on the back of the barrel—keeping things simple and reliable the way they were meant to be. At 13.3 inches overall and tipping the scales at 2.51 pounds, it's fast to handle and comfortable to carry for extended shooting sessions.

The 7.5-inch round barrel gives you sight radius and velocity without excessive weight, and the walnut grips provide a classic touch that won't slip during extended shooting. Six-shot capacity is standard. If you prefer a nickel finish instead of the case-hardened blue, that option is available—just ask us about the nickel-frame variant.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between this Open Top and a traditional 1860 Army percussion revolver?

The Open Top is designed to fire .38 Special cartridges, whereas the original 1860 Army used percussion caps and loose powder. This cartridge conversion gives you the classic looks and ergonomics of the original with the convenience and reliability of modern metallic ammunition.

Is this revolver suitable for Cowboy Action Shooting?

Yes. The Open Top's .38 Special chambering, six-shot capacity, and traditional appearance make it a popular choice for SASS and similar competition formats. Check your specific match rules, as some events have caliber or configuration restrictions.

Can I get this with a nickel finish instead?

Yes. Taylors & Company offers a nickel-finished version. Contact us for availability and ordering details on the nickel variant.

What sights does it have, and are they adjustable?

The Open Top features a fixed blade front sight and a fixed rear sight integrated into the back of the barrel. These are not adjustable and maintain the historical simplicity of the original design.
