Built on the proven Browning patent, this rifle captures the spirit of late-19th-century accuracy culture with period-correct aesthetics and genuine working performance. The 32-inch octagonal barrel and straightforward walnut stock create a rifle that handles like a classic field piece while delivering the reliable power that made the .45-70 a legend in hunting and target work.

Whether you're drawn to historical firearms, pursuing long-range target shooting, or hunting with a cartridge renowned for deep penetration and stopping power, the 1885 High Wall offers authentic shooting character without compromise. The case-hardened receiver paired with a blue barrel finish gives it the working-rifle appearance of era-correct firearms, while the buckhorn rear sight and blade front sight are configured for the kind of deliberate, aimed shooting that defines single-shot rifles. At 10 pounds and 49 inches overall, it balances well enough for practical field use yet provides the heft and sight radius serious shooters appreciate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 1885 High Wall suitable for hunting?

Yes. The .45-70 Gov't is a proven hunting cartridge with excellent power and penetration. The rifle's weight, sight radius, and straightforward handling make it practical for field hunting, particularly for deer and larger game where the cartridge's ballistics shine.

What makes this rifle different from modern bolt-actions or lever-actions?

The 1885 is a single-shot rifle—you manually load one round at a time and extract the fired case after each shot. This design encourages deliberate, aimed shooting and is inherently reliable with fewer moving parts. It reflects the shooting style and accuracy-focused culture of the 1880s–1920s, when this rifle was originally popular.

Can I use different sights or optics on this rifle?

The rifle ships with buckhorn rear and blade front sights. Taylors & Company offers an optional longer tang screw (model U870063A, sold separately) to assist with sight placement if you want to add or adjust sighting equipment, but all sight modifications are your responsibility.

How does the .45-70 Gov't perform compared to other hunting cartridges?

The .45-70 is known for deep penetration, heavy bullet capability, and consistent stopping power at moderate ranges. It was the standard military rifle cartridge for generations and remains popular for hunting and long-range target shooting. Ballistics depend on the specific load you choose.
