The Savage Arms Stevens 555 Compact 410 gauge over/under shotgun is built for shooters who need a lighter-recoiling, maneuverable gun scaled to their frame. With a compact 13.25-inch length of pull and mid-length forearm, this .410 is comfortable for smaller-stature hunters and shooters—whether you're working upland birds, clay targets, or introducing new shooters to the sport. The oil brown finish and Turkish walnut furniture give it the classic shotgun looks without the price tag that usually comes attached.

Internally, the 555 Compact doesn't cut corners on strength. A lightweight aluminum receiver is reinforced at the breech with a steel insert, so you get the weight savings where it matters without sacrificing durability. Chrome-lined barrels protect against rust and corrosion, and five interchangeable choke tubes mean you're not locked into one shot pattern—swap them out for whatever the day's hunting demands. The single selective mechanical trigger lets you choose your barrel, and the tang-mounted manual safety is intuitive and reliable.

At 24 inches, the barrels are short enough to swing fast in tight cover but long enough to generate effective patterns downrange. This is a workhorse gun: lightweight, quick to mount, and versatile enough for a lifetime of shooting. Whether you're a recoil-sensitive shooter who's been dreading .410 shooting or someone building a first shotgun for a younger family member, the Stevens 555 Compact delivers genuine utility and honest craftsmanship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Stevens 555 Compact suitable for young or recoil-sensitive shooters?

Yes. The .410 gauge generates significantly less recoil than 20, 16, or 12 gauge, and the compact 13.25-inch length of pull is specifically designed for smaller-framed shooters. This makes it an excellent introduction to shotgun shooting for younger hunters and those who find full-size shotguns uncomfortable.

What's included with the choke tubes, and can I change them myself?

The gun comes with five interchangeable choke tubes, allowing you to adjust your shot pattern for different hunting situations and distances. You can swap them yourself—it's a straightforward process that takes seconds with the right tool.

Is the Stevens 555 Compact a good upland hunting gun?

The short 24-inch barrels, light weight, and quick handling make the 555 Compact well-suited to upland hunting where you're moving through cover and need fast target acquisition. The .410 is appropriate for upland birds at reasonable distances with proper shot placement.

What does the steel breech reinforcement do?

The steel insert at the breech strengthens the junction where the barrels meet the receiver—the highest-pressure zone in a shotgun. This allows the aluminum receiver to be lighter overall while maintaining the strength needed to safely fire the gun repeatedly.
