The Savage Arms Stevens 555 Compact 28 gauge over/under shotgun is built for shooters who want a nimble, feature-rich gun without the premium price tag. This 28 gauge breaks open like a traditional side-by-side concept but with the ballistic advantages of over/under barrels, making it equally at home on a upland hunt, at the clay range, or working through a skeet course. The lightweight aluminum receiver and 24-inch barrels keep overall weight to just 5 pounds—ideal for a gun you'll carry all day. Pair that with a crisp 5-pound single selective mechanical trigger and Turkish walnut furniture, and you've got a working shotgun that handles smoothly and points naturally.

The 28 gauge cartridge has earned serious respect among experienced hunters and competitive shooters. It delivers less recoil and lighter ammunition than a 20 or 12, which means less fatigue on long days and easier follow-up shots—a real advantage when birds are flushing fast or you're working doubles at the plate. The chrome-lined carbon steel barrels are built to last, and the included five choke tubes (Full, Improved Modified, Modified, Improved Cylinder, and Cylinder) let you dial in the right pattern for your distance and game.

Safety and handling are straightforward: the tang-mounted safety sits right where your thumb naturally rests, and manual extractors mean you're in control of spent hulls—no fumbling with automatic ejectors when you need to reload quickly. The semi-pistol grip stock and fixed 13-inch pull are designed for a consistent, comfortable mount. At 39.57 inches overall, this compact gun cuts through cover without catching, and its modest weight makes it the kind of firearm you'll actually want to take afield, season after season.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's included with the Stevens 555 Compact?

The gun ships with five choke tubes—Full, Improved Modified, Modified, Improved Cylinder, and Cylinder—all Beretta/Benelli Mobil compatible. This variety covers everything from tight waterfowl patterns to open upland and skeet configurations, so you can tune the gun to your situation right out of the box.

Is the 28 gauge suitable for upland hunting?

Yes. The 28 gauge is a proven upland cartridge, especially for lighter-framed game birds like quail, woodcock, and grouse. Its mild recoil and efficient payload make it a favorite among hunters who value precision and comfort on all-day hunts. The compact barrel length and light weight of this Stevens model make it particularly nimble in brush.

Can left-handed shooters use this gun?

The tang-mounted safety is ambidextrous, so it's accessible to both right- and left-handed shooters. However, the semi-pistol grip stock is designed with a fixed 13-inch pull and is not specifically configured as a left-hand stock.

What's the trigger pull weight?

The single selective mechanical trigger breaks at a consistent 5 pounds, offering a crisp, predictable let-off without being so light that it's prone to unintended firing during the carry or mount.
