The Savage Arms Stevens 301 is a no-frills single-shot 20-gauge break-action shotgun built for hunters and shooters who value dependable performance over complexity. Model 22558 pairs a classic break-action design—proven reliable for over a century—with a modern synthetic stock that shrugs off the bumps and weather of real fieldwork. Whether you're hunting upland game, working around the homestead, or introducing a newer shooter to shotguns, the Stevens 301's straightforward operation and lightweight profile make it a practical choice.

Built on Savage's reputation for no-nonsense firearms, this 20-gauge features a 26-inch carbon steel barrel with a matte black finish that resists glare and corrosion. The synthetic stock eliminates wood's maintenance demands and handles wet conditions without warping or swelling. The break-action mechanism is crisp and reliable—you simply pivot the barrel down, load a single round, snap it back into battery, and you're ready to fire. That simplicity means fewer parts to wear out and faster field cleaning when you're miles from home.

The 20-gauge chambering makes this shotgun easier to shoot than a 12-gauge, with less recoil and lighter ammunition to carry on long days afield. If you're after an honest, durable shotgun without unnecessary features or premium pricing, the Stevens 301 delivers honest gun-maker value.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a single-shot break-action shotgun good for?

Break-action shotguns are reliable, simple to operate, and have few moving parts to fail. A single-shot design is ideal for hunting upland birds, small game, and hunting situations where you take deliberate, aimed shots. The 20-gauge also makes it an excellent teaching platform for new shooters due to lighter recoil.

Is the Stevens 301 a good beginner shotgun?

Yes. The straightforward break-action mechanism, light recoil of the 20-gauge, and synthetic stock make it an approachable choice for hunters or shooters new to shotguns. There's nothing complicated to learn or maintain.

What does the synthetic stock offer over wood?

A synthetic stock resists moisture, temperature swings, and rough handling without warping, splitting, or requiring finishing maintenance. It's ideal for field use in variable weather and won't swell or shrink with humidity changes.

Can I use this for hunting and sport shooting?

The Stevens 301's simple, reliable design and 20-gauge chambering make it suitable for both hunting and range shooting. Many shooters appreciate its low cost of operation and ease of use across different shooting disciplines.
