The Remington 700 SPS Tactical is a purpose-built bolt-action rifle in 308 Winchester that balances portability with the stopping power serious shooters demand. With its compact 16.5" barrel and overall length of 36.25", this platform delivers a handy package for hunters working thick country, shooters setting up in confined spaces, or anyone who values maneuverability without sacrificing inherent accuracy. Chambered in .308 Win—one of the most versatile and reloadable cartridges in North America—it's equally at home on a hunting rifle, a tactical range setup, or a DMR-style build. The 700 action is the gold standard for aftermarket support and customization, giving you unlimited upgrade paths down the road.

The rifle wears a matte blued carbon steel finish that handles field use without unnecessary flash, paired with a Hogue overmolded stock in matte gray. That rubberized Hogue grip and forend provide genuine purchase in wet or gloved hands and dampen recoil better than laminate or plastic alone. At 7.375 pounds, it's light enough to carry all day but substantial enough to settle into a solid shooting position. The 1:10 twist will stabilize the full range of .308 projectiles you're likely to sling, from match rounds to hunting loads.

Four rounds in the magazine keep the action slick and compact—standard for this platform. The 13.375" length of pull and 1.125" drop at comb work for most shooters as-is, though the popularity of the 700 action means drop-in stocks and cheek risers are plentiful if you want to dial in your geometry. Whether you're upgrading a scope, swapping triggers, or threading the barrel for a can, the Remington 700 SPS Tactical gives you a solid, proven foundation and the aftermarket ecosystem to make it your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

What scopes and mounts work with the Remington 700 SPS Tactical?

The 700 comes drilled and tapped for Picatinny-compatible scope rings and bases. Any modern hunting or tactical scope with standard rings will mount directly. The widespread popularity of the 700 means rail systems, extended bases, and specialty mounts are readily available from multiple manufacturers.

Is the 308 Winchester suitable for long-range hunting?

Yes. The .308 Win is a proven long-range cartridge for deer, elk, and medium game when paired with quality ammunition and optics. Your effective range depends on your skill, load, and intended game—but the 700's renowned accuracy and the .308's ballistics support serious distance work.

Can I customize or upgrade this rifle?

Absolutely. The Remington 700 action has the most developed aftermarket ecosystem of any bolt rifle. Drop-in stocks, triggers, chassis systems, barrels, and handguards are all readily available. This platform rewards customization and is ideal if you plan to build toward specific goals over time.

What's included with the rifle?

The Model R85538 ships as a complete rifle ready to mount optics and shoot. A magazine is included; other accessories such as ammunition, scope, or sling are not.
