The Remington 700 in .300 Wby Mag is a bolt-action rifle built on one of the most proven platforms in hunting history. This magnum configuration pairs the legendary Model 700 receiver design with a 24-inch stainless steel barrel and a classic walnut stock—a combination that's earned trust among serious big-game hunters for decades. The .300 Wby Mag delivers the velocity and energy needed for long-range hunting of elk, moose, and other large game, and the 700's mechanical design is engineered to handle the pressure consistently and safely.

What sets the Model 700 apart is its foundation: a receiver machined from solid steel bar stock rather than casting, giving you uniformity and strength that shows in shot-to-shot consistency. The cylindrical receiver design beds solidly in the walnut stock, creating a stable platform for accuracy. The bolt face locks deep into a counter-bored breech, and the receiver itself wraps around the cartridge case head, forming what Remington calls "three rings of steel." That engineering isn't marketing—it's real mechanical advantage for reliability under the pressures a magnum cartridge demands. The integral extractor is set into a groove that supports the cartridge rim uniformly, another detail that matters when you're counting on your rifle.

The 24-inch fluted barrel reduces overall weight without sacrificing the stiffness that helps accuracy. Pair this with the clean, proven aesthetics of the walnut stock, and you've got a rifle that looks the part and performs it. Whether you're hunting at elevation in the West or glassing from a stand in big timber, the .300 Wby Mag in a Model 700 gives you the velocity, the engineering, and the reliability that experienced hunters have relied on for generations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What game can I hunt with a .300 Wby Mag?

The .300 Wby Mag is a premium magnum cartridge designed for long-range hunting of large game, including elk, moose, and other big-game animals. Its velocity and energy retention make it effective at extended distances where energy retention matters most.

Why is the Model 700 receiver machined from bar stock?

Bar stock machining creates a receiver with superior uniformity and strength compared to casting methods. Combined with the cylindrical design and the three-rings-of-steel locking system, it provides consistent bedding, safe cartridge containment under high pressure, and excellent shot-to-shot repeatability.

Is the barrel fluted, and why?

Yes, the 24-inch barrel is fluted stainless steel. Fluting reduces weight while maintaining barrel stiffness, which supports accuracy and helps manage the rifle's overall handling without compromising performance.

What does the walnut stock offer?

The walnut stock is finished with attention to detail and provides a classic, proven material that beds the cylindrical receiver solidly for consistent accuracy. Walnut is also durable and aesthetically valued by hunters who appreciate traditional rifle design.
