The Mossberg 590 Shockwave SPX is a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun purpose-built for home defense and personal protection without the regulatory complexity of NFA-registered firearms. This compact, non-NFA shotgun delivers the stopping power and reliability shooters expect from the 590 platform while keeping things short and maneuverable—exactly what you want when seconds count and hallways are tight.

The SPX builds on Mossberg's proven Shockwave concept with genuine upgrades. A factory-installed Picatinny rail atop the receiver lets you mount optics, lasers, or lights to suit your setup. The breacher-style muzzle serves double duty as a defensive tool and mounting point, while the integral heat shield protects your support hand from barrel heat during extended use. An aluminum side saddle integrated into the receiver keeps five extra rounds within arm's reach—practical for home defense scenarios where reload speed matters.

Weighing 6.75 pounds with a 14.37-inch barrel and 26.5-inch overall length, the 590 Shockwave SPX strikes the balance between firepower and handling you need in a defensive shotgun. The 5+1 round capacity (five in the magazine tube, one in the chamber) gives you reliable firepower before reloading. Built on the same battle-tested 590 receiver that's earned trust with military and law enforcement, this gun carries that duty-ready pedigree into your home defense plan.

If you're building a personal defense setup and want a legal, manageable shotgun without the paperwork and wait times of NFA registration, the 590 Shockwave SPX delivers the platform, capacity, and accessory flexibility to get the job done.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Mossberg 590 Shockwave SPX legal to own as a non-NFA shotgun?

Yes. The 590 Shockwave SPX is designed and manufactured as a non-NFA firearm, meaning it meets federal requirements for ownership without requiring NFA registration or a tax stamp. Always verify your state and local laws before purchase, as some jurisdictions have additional restrictions on short-barreled shotguns.

Can I mount a red dot or thermal optic to the 590 Shockwave SPX?

Yes. The factory Picatinny rail on top of the receiver provides a standard mounting surface for optics, lasers, and light systems designed for Picatinny attachment. This lets you customize the shotgun for your specific home defense or tactical setup.

How many rounds does the 590 Shockwave SPX hold?

The shotgun holds five rounds in the magazine tube plus one in the chamber, giving you 5+1 total capacity. The aluminum side saddle mounted on the receiver provides quick-access storage for five additional rounds.
