The Mossberg 500 Field 12ga pump shotgun is a workhorse scattergun built on the platform that's defined reliability for millions of users. This Model 56420 pairs the proven 500 action with a 28-inch barrel and black synthetic stock—a practical setup for hunting upland game, sport shooting, or general field work. The 500 series earned its reputation through no-nonsense engineering: steel-to-steel lockup, dual extractors, twin action bars, and an anti-jam elevator keep things running whether you're in the marsh before dawn or at the clay course on a Saturday afternoon. The short cycling time means you can move to the next target quickly, and the straightforward design means fewer things to go wrong.

What makes the 500 series so versatile is its modular design. The 28-inch barrel on this Field model is just the starting point—Mossberg's 500 accessory barrel ecosystem lets you adapt the shotgun to different roles without buying a whole new gun. Swap in a shorter tactical barrel, a rifled slug tube, or a turkey choke barrel, and you've essentially got multiple shotguns in one receiver. That flexibility, combined with the black synthetic stock's durability and low maintenance, explains why the 500 remains a favorite among hunters and shooters who want a straightforward, dependable gun that won't break the bank.

The ambidextrous safety means either-handed shooters can operate the gun naturally, and the overall simplicity of the platform makes it easy to field-strip and maintain. If you're after a 12-gauge pump that handles hunting, sport shooting, and general purpose use without unnecessary frills, the Mossberg 500 Field delivers time-tested performance.
