The Henry H010BG Brass Side Gate is a .45-70 lever action rifle built for hunters and shooters who appreciate classic American firearm design paired with practical field capability. Chambered in the powerful .45-70 Government cartridge, this rifle combines the smooth, reliable lever action mechanism Henry is known for with distinctive brass accents that catch light and age beautifully. The 22-inch octagon barrel strikes a balance between velocity and handling, while the side-loading gate—a feature many lever-gun purists prefer over traditional top loading—speeds up ammunition changes without fumbling with a magazine tube.

Built on a polished hardened brass receiver that serves as the rifle's backbone, the H010BG delivers both durability and aesthetics. The American walnut furniture wears naturally and improves with use, while brass sling swivel studs and buttplate reinforce the period-correct looks without sacrificing function. At 8.10 pounds and 41.1 inches overall, it points naturally and carries comfortably, whether you're working through thick country or setting up at the range. The 4-round capacity suits the deliberate pace of lever-gun shooting—each round counts, and the action encourages thoughtful aim.

Sights come factory-installed: a fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear with diamond insert for precise elevation and windage, paired with a brass bead front. If you prefer optics, the receiver is drilled and tapped for Weaver scope mounts, opening the door to modern glass while keeping the rifle's classic profile. A transfer bar safety keeps things secure, and the large loop lever accommodates gloved hands—essential in cold seasons when big-game hunting heats up.

This is a rifle for hunters who reload, handloaders who enjoy the .45-70's versatility, and collectors drawn to Henry's craftsmanship. It works equally well in timber and canyon, from whitetail drives to elk camps to informal target sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the side-loading gate different from a traditional Henry lever rifle?

Instead of loading rounds down a tube magazine under the barrel, the H010BG's side-loading gate lets you feed cartridges directly into the magazine tube from the side of the receiver. This is faster for topping off ammunition and appeals to shooters who prefer the cleaner lines of a traditional rifle design.

Can I mount an optic on this rifle?

Yes. The receiver is drilled and tapped for scope mounts and is compatible with Weaver 63B mounts. You can add modern glass while keeping the classic lever-gun aesthetic, or stick with the factory iron sights if you prefer the traditional setup.

Is the H010BG suitable for hunting, or is it a range/collector rifle?

This rifle was designed to handle hunting, target shooting, and collecting. The .45-70 cartridge is plenty capable for medium to large game, the ergonomics and sights work well in the field, and the brass receiver and walnut furniture make it a handsome addition to any collection.

What does the transfer bar safety do?

The transfer bar safety blocks the firing pin from striking the primer unless the trigger is actively depressed. This is a modern safety feature that lets you carry the rifle securely with the hammer down without risk of accidental discharge, even if the rifle is dropped or jostled.
