The Great Lakes Firearms .223 Wylde 16" stainless steel barrel is a drop-in replacement or build component engineered for shooters who want to run both .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO through the same rifle without compromise. The .223 Wylde chamber splits the difference between the two cartridges—tighter than 5.56 NATO for better accuracy with commercial .223 loads, but safely rated for full-power 5.56 NATO rounds when you need that extra velocity. This 16-inch heavy barrel (HBAR) features a 1:8 twist rate, stainless steel construction, and comes with a muzzle brake designed to install without Loctite. The barrel threads to 1/2 x 28 and feeds through M4 ramps, making it compatible with standard AR platform uppers and lowers.
Built on a 7075 aluminum upper and lower, the rifle delivers a clean, lightweight platform at just 6.8 lbs. The 15.25-inch aluminum handguard is fully railed for accessories, and the carbine-length gas system with 0.750 gas block keeps recoil mild for faster follow-up shots. A mil-spec polymer grip and standard 5.5–6 lb trigger come standard. You get one 30-round magazine in the box and no front or rear sights, leaving your picatinny rail open for the optic setup you actually want.
Whether you're building a hybrid rifle that handles both match-grade .223 and duty-grade 5.56 ammo, or you just want the flexibility to shoot whatever's in stock, the .223 Wylde chamber is the smart middle ground. At 33.25 inches overall, it's compact enough for confined spaces or vehicles but long enough to wring velocity and accuracy out of mid-range defensive or hunting loads.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I shoot .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO in this rifle?
Yes. The .223 Wylde chamber is designed to safely shoot both cartridges. It provides a tighter chamber than standard 5.56 NATO specs for improved accuracy with commercial .223 loads, while remaining fully compatible with and rated for 5.56 NATO rounds.
What's included and what do I need to complete the rifle?
The rifle comes with one 30-round magazine and a muzzle brake. It has no front or rear sights, so you'll need to source an optic mounted to the picatinny rail, and you may want to add iron sights as a backup if desired.
Is this barrel/rifle compatible with standard AR-15 parts?
Yes. The barrel uses standard 1/2 x 28 threads, M4 feed ramps, and a carbine gas system. The aluminum upper and lower are 7075 aluminum and designed to work with mil-spec AR components, though always verify compatibility with any aftermarket parts you plan to add.
What is the difference between the 1:8 twist and other twist rates?
The 1:8 twist stabilizes a wide range of bullet weights effectively. This rate is fast enough to stabilize heavier match-grade rounds (.223 Wylde often favors 75–77 grain bullets) while still performing well with lighter varmint loads, giving you flexibility across the .223 and 5.56 spectrum.
