The Browning BL-22 Grade I is a lever-action .22 rimfire rifle built for shooters who want reliability, handling, and genuine Browning quality without the fuss of centerfire recoil or cost. Whether you're working small game, plinking steel, or introducing a younger shooter to the fundamentals of rifle handling, this classic .22 delivers the smooth, intuitive operation that made Browning lever rifles legendary. The BL-22 accepts .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle ammunition interchangeably—load what you have on hand, and the rifle runs them all without adjustment.
What sets the BL-22 apart is engineering focused on the shooter's experience. The lever throw is notably short, reducing the arc and effort needed to cycle the action—critical for quick follow-up shots and easier manipulation for smaller hands. The tubular magazine feeds reliably through the machined steel receiver, while the gloss black walnut furniture and polished blued steel give this rifle a finished, purposeful appearance that feels like a real firearm, not a toy. At 5 pounds and just under 37 inches overall, it's light enough for all-day carrying yet substantial enough for accurate shooting.
This is a Grade I rifle, meaning it carries Browning's core standards for fit, finish, and mechanical reliability. The fixed front and folding rear sights are straightforward and effective. If you shoot .22 ammunition and appreciate rifles that operate with mechanical directness—where you work the lever and trust the gun to function—the BL-22 Grade I is a proven, no-nonsense choice that has earned respect across generations of rimfire shooters.

Frequently Asked Questions
What ammunition does the BL-22 shoot?
The BL-22 chambers .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle ammunition. You can load any mix of these three types into the tubular magazine without adjustment, and the rifle will feed and fire them reliably.
Is the BL-22 good for hunting small game and varmints?
Yes. The BL-22's .22 rimfire is well-suited for hunting rabbits, squirrels, and other small game at practical ranges, as well as for predator control and varmint work where centerfire rifles are overkill or impractical.
What does the short lever throw do?
The BL-22's 33-inch lever throw—shorter than many competing .22 lever rifles—reduces the arc and physical effort required to cycle the action. This makes faster follow-up shots easier and the rifle more intuitive to operate, especially for younger or smaller shooters.
What is included and what sights does it have?
The BL-22 Grade I comes with a fixed steel blade front sight and a folding rear sight. These are mechanical, fixed sights suitable for standard .22 shooting distances; neither are adjustable, and the rifle does not include scope mounting provisions.
