The Browning A5 Ultimate Sweet Sixteen is a 16-gauge autoloading shotgun built for hunters who appreciate both refined aesthetics and reliable performance in the field. This 2022 SHOT Show special combines the timeless appeal of hand-finished walnut and engraved metalwork with modern shotgun engineering—a rare combination that makes the A5 Sweet Sixteen equally at home pursuing upland game or on the sporting clays course. The 16 gauge has long been known as the gentleman's gauge, and Browning's A5 proves why: it delivers a shot payload closer to a 12 gauge and handling characteristics nearer a 20 gauge, all in a package that's noticeably lighter and more pointable than larger-bore guns.

At the heart of the A5 is Browning's Kinematic Drive short-recoil operating system, a proven design that harnesses recoil energy to cycle the action reliably across a wide spectrum of loads and weather conditions. The receiver is purpose-built for the 16 gauge—smaller and lighter than a 12-gauge receiver—with a distinctive humpback profile that extends your sight plane and adds to the gun's classic lines. The satin nickel receiver features brushed accents and scroll engraving; the Grade III Turkish walnut stock sports a gloss oil finish and is shim-adjustable for cast and drop. A jeweled bolt and checkered grip round out the fit and finish.

Functionally, the A5 Sweet Sixteen delivers modern conveniences without compromise. Speed Load Plus acceleration and a quick-install TurnKey Magazine Plug make loading and unloading smooth and fast. Three Invector-DS choke tubes (Full, Modified, Improved Cylinder) give you pattern flexibility, while Total Barrel Dynamics and the Invector-DS system maximize performance from 16-gauge ammunition. A fiber-optic front sight and ivory mid-bead provide solid sight picture, and the Inflex recoil pad manages felt recoil effectively. The 26-inch barrel is chambered for 2¾-inch shells, standard for 16-gauge hunting and clay work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the 16 gauge a good choice for hunting?

The 16 gauge strikes a balance that many hunters prefer: it delivers a shot payload closer to a 12 gauge while remaining lighter and more maneuverable than a 12, with a recoil profile similar to a 20 gauge. A well-built 16 like the A5 often patterns as effectively as—or better than—larger-bore guns, making it ideal for upland hunting and clay work.

Is the A5 Ultimate Sweet Sixteen reliable with different shotshell loads?

Yes. The Kinematic Drive short-recoil system is designed to operate reliably across a wide variety of loads and performs consistently under extreme weather, temperature, and moisture conditions. The design is simple and proven, delivering dependable function in demanding field conditions.

What choke tubes come with this shotgun?

The A5 Ultimate Sweet Sixteen includes three Invector-DS choke tubes: Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder. This gives you versatility for different shooting distances and game.

Can the stock be adjusted for fit?

Yes, the Grade III Turkish walnut stock is shim-adjustable for both cast and drop, allowing you to customize the fit to your physiology and shooting style.
