The Winchester SX4 Waterfowl Hunter is a 20-gauge semi-automatic shotgun built for serious duck and goose hunters who demand reliability in cold, wet conditions. This 28-inch-barrel model chambers 3-inch shells and features Winchester's proven Active Valve system—the same gas-operated platform that made the SX3 a field favorite, now refined with improved balance and smoother operating components for faster target acquisition and reduced felt recoil. At 6 lbs 12 oz, it handles like a dream in the blind and swings naturally on fast-moving targets.

The real standout is the Mossy Oak Bottomlands finish, a time-tested camouflage pattern that has earned the trust of waterfowl hunters for decades. Bottomlands' refined design blends seamlessly into marsh vegetation, timber, and shallow-water environments where ducks and geese actually live. If you've hunted with Mossy Oak before, you already know what this pattern delivers—and Winchester has only made it better on the SX4 platform.

Ergonomics matter when you're spending hours in a cold boat or blind. The SX4 comes with a 14 1/4-inch length of pull, drop at comb of 1 3/4 inches, and drop at heel of 2 inches—geometry designed for comfortable mounting and a natural sight picture. The magazine holds four 2 3/4-inch shells (or three 3-inch rounds), giving you follow-up shots when a flock commits to your decoys. This is the shotgun for hunters who value proven mechanics, smart design, and the confidence that comes with equipment that simply works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the SX4 20-gauge good for waterfowl hunting?

Absolutely. The 20-gauge is a proven waterfowl round, especially in a semi-auto like the SX4 where the Active Valve system manages recoil effectively. The 3-inch chamber gives you the flexibility to run heavier loads when you need them, and the 28-inch barrel is ideal for the swing and lead distance waterfowl hunting demands.

What's the difference between the SX4 and the older SX3?

Both use the same Active Valve gas-operated system, but the SX4 has refinements to balance and operating components that improve speed and reduce recoil. If you hunted with the SX3, you'll appreciate the incremental improvements in handling and reliability on the SX4.

Does the Mossy Oak Bottomlands pattern really work?

Mossy Oak Bottomlands is a legacy camouflage pattern trusted by waterfowl hunters for good reason. It's designed to blend naturally in marsh grasses, timber, and shallow-water habitat where ducks and geese hunt. Winchester has refined the pattern on the SX4, so you're getting a proven finish that has earned its reputation in the field.

How many shells does it hold?

The magazine capacity is four 2 3/4-inch shells. If you're running 3-inch ammunition, you can load three rounds in the magazine plus one in the chamber.
