The Winchester 70 Featherweight Compact in .308 Win is a refined bolt-action rifle built for shooters who want genuine accuracy and handling in a scaled-down package. At just 6 lb 8 oz with a 20-inch barrel and 39.5-inch overall length, this compact .308 delivers the precision and heritage of Winchester's legendary Model 70 action without the bulk of a full-size rifle. It's ideal for hunters working steep terrain, younger or smaller-framed shooters building confidence, or anyone who values a nimble, purpose-built mountain rifle over raw firepower.
This Featherweight Compact carries the Model 70 DNA: a forged steel short action receiver with integral recoil lug, Pre-'64 controlled round feed with claw extractor, and a three-position safety you can read at a glance. The 20-inch cold hammer-forged barrel is free-floating with a recessed target crown—Winchester's way of protecting accuracy and rifling longevity. Inside, the M.O.A. trigger system delivers zero take-up, zero creep, and zero overtravel, giving you the clean break hunters and precision shooters demand. A one-piece alloy bottom metal adds rigidity for consistency shot to shot.
Aesthetically, the Featherweight Compact earns its name through real woodcraft: satin black walnut stock with classic Featherweight cut checkering and schnabel forearm, plus polished metal surfaces that age beautifully in the field. The Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad tames the .308's push without bulk. Magazine capacity is 5 rounds, and the jeweled bolt body with knurled handle adds function and tradition. This is a rifle designed to be lived with—trained with, hunted with, and passed along.
The .308 Winchester remains one of hunting's most versatile and reliable cartridges, equally at home on whitetail at 200 yards or elk at longer range. The Featherweight Compact's compact dimensions and light weight make it a genuine mountain rifle, not a compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Winchester 70 Featherweight Compact good for hunting?
Yes. The .308 Winchester is a proven hunting cartridge across North America, and this compact configuration is especially suited to mountain and backcountry hunting where lighter weight and shorter length translate to easier carries and faster target acquisition in tight country.
Who is this rifle best suited for?
The Featherweight Compact is designed for smaller-framed shooters, younger hunters, and anyone who prefers a lighter, more nimble rifle over a full-size platform. The shorter length of pull and reduced weight make it more comfortable and confidence-inspiring for a wider range of body types.
What makes the Model 70 action reliable?
The Winchester 70 uses Pre-'64 controlled round feed with a claw extractor that fully controls the cartridge from magazine to chamber to ejection. The forged steel short action receiver is bedded front and rear with an integral recoil lug to eliminate shifts in zero.
