The Winchester 1873 Sporter Octagon Grip Color in .357/.38 is a modern take on one of America's most iconic lever-action rifles. Built on the proven 1873 platform, this sporter delivers the smooth, fast-cycling action that made the original famous—ideal for hunters who value reliability, quick follow-up shots, and a rifle that handles well in brush or at moderate hunting ranges. The octagon barrel and grip color options give it character that stands out without sacrificing function.

This .357/.38 configuration is particularly appealing if you're building a rifle and revolver setup around the same ammunition—you can practice with light .38 loads and hunt with stouter .357 rounds, all through the same action. The 14-round capacity means you've got ample shots on hand, while the 24-inch octagon barrel balances velocity with handling in typical hunting situations. At 8 pounds, it's manageable for a full day afield without being so light that recoil becomes harsh.

The rifle ships with open sights—a bead front and semi-buckhorn rear—that are quick and intuitive for close to mid-range work. The black walnut furniture and satin oil finish give it a classic look that ages gracefully. Overall length of 43 inches keeps it nimble in vehicles or brush, while the 1:18.75 twist ensures good stability with the wide range of bullet weights available in both calibers.

Whether you're drawn to the 1873 for its heritage, its reliability, or its sheer shootability, this sporter-grade version delivers the gun without unnecessary frills. It's a working rifle for hunters who understand that simpler mechanisms often outlast complicated ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hunt with both .38 Special and .357 Magnum in the same rifle?

Yes. The Winchester 1873 Sporter in .357/.38 is chambered for both calibers. You can load and fire .38 Special for practice or lighter hunting scenarios, then switch to .357 Magnum for more power. The 1:18.75 twist handles both rounds reliably.

What sights come on this rifle?

The rifle is equipped with a bead front sight and semi-buckhorn rear sight, giving you classic open-sight shooting. These are fast and intuitive for typical hunting distances and work well without batteries or electronics.

Is this rifle good for hunting?

Yes. The .357/.38 lever action is effective for hunting medium-sized game at reasonable ranges, and the 14-round capacity, light weight, and short 43-inch length make it nimble in brush or timber. The semi-buckhorn rear sight and bead front are purpose-built for quick target acquisition.

Can I mount a scope on this rifle?

The specs provided do not include information about scope mounting provisions. We recommend contacting us directly if you're interested in adding optics to this model.
