The Winchester 1873 Short Rifle in .44-40 Win is a genuine piece of American firearms history—a working rifle that carries the legacy of the gun that settled the frontier. This lever-action rifle pairs classic Winchester engineering with authentic period details: a 20-inch barrel, 10-round capacity, and oiled walnut furniture that feels as good in your hands as it looks. Whether you're a serious collector, a cowboy action shooter, or someone who appreciates firearms that connect you to genuine heritage, the 1873 Short delivers timeless reliability and character that no modern reproduction can match.

The .44-40 Winchester cartridge was the original choice for this rifle, and Winchester has stayed true to that pairing. The lever action cycles smoothly, the brass bead front sight and semi-buckhorn rear sight are set up for quick target acquisition at practical distances, and the straight-grip walnut stock with its satin oil finish absorbs recoil while showcasing the wood grain. The blued steel finish and case-colored details complete the authentic appearance—this is the look and feel shooters expect from a genuine 1873.

At 7 pounds 4 ounces and 39 inches overall, it's nimble enough for shooting matches or horseback work, yet substantial enough to deliver the power hunters and shooters demand from a centerfire rifle. The receiver tang is drilled and tapped if you want to add an optional tang-mounted rear sight for a more refined sight picture. This is a rifle built to be used, not just displayed—though it will turn heads either way.
