The Weatherby Mark V Backcountry 2.0 bolt-action rifle in 28 Nosler with a 28" barrel is a purpose-built mountain hunter's rifle that doesn't ask you to choose between power and packability. Tipping the scales at just 5.2 lbs, this lightweight rifle proves that Weatherby's magnum-class cartridges don't require you to haul a tank into the backcountry. The 28 Nosler delivers serious long-range velocity and energy, making it a standout choice for hunters willing to put in the work for elk, mule deer, or other big game at distance—and the Backcountry 2.0's featherweight construction means those extra miles back to the truck won't feel like punishment.

The secret to its weight savings is the Peak 44 Blacktooth carbon fiber stock, which weighs just 19 oz and represents some of the lightest production stock engineering available. That's not compromise; it's innovation. The fluted barrel, trigger guard, and receiver finished in Patriot Brown Cerakote shed weight while adding visual character, while the bolt and safety wear Graphite Black Cerakote for contrast. The dark green and brown sponge pattern accents on the stock tie the whole aesthetic together with a purposeful, field-ready look.

Recoil management matters when you're running a magnum cartridge in a lightweight package, and Weatherby equipped the Mark V Backcountry 2.0 with an Accubreak and 3D Hex recoil pad to keep shooting comfortable and follow-up shots on target. This is the rifle you want when you've hiked 10 miles from the truck and the moment of truth arrives—lightweight enough to carry all day, capable enough to perform when it counts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Mark V Backcountry 2.0 suitable for long-range hunting?

Yes. The 28 Nosler cartridge is designed for long-range performance, delivering high velocity and energy retention at distance. The 28" barrel length supports optimal powder burn and muzzle velocity for the cartridge. This makes the rifle an excellent choice for elk, mule deer, and similar game at extended range, especially in open mountain terrain where you can take advantage of the ballistics.

Why is this rifle so light, and does that affect durability?

The lightweight design comes from the Peak 44 Blacktooth carbon fiber stock and fluted barrel, receiver, and trigger guard—both proven weight-reduction techniques that don't compromise structural integrity. The rifle is purpose-built for mountain hunting, where carrying capacity matters. The carbon fiber stock and fluting are engineered to maintain rigidity while reducing mass.

How does Weatherby manage recoil in such a light rifle chambered in a magnum?

The Mark V Backcountry 2.0 is equipped with an Accubreak muzzle brake and a 3D Hex recoil pad designed to absorb and distribute recoil impulse, making the rifle more comfortable to shoot and easier to spot your shot, even in a lightweight package.
