The Taurus Raging Hunter .500 S&W revolver with 8.37" barrel is a serious large-frame handgun built for hunters who need maximum power for dangerous game or big four-legged predators. If you've been searching for a .500 Magnum revolver that balances terminal ballistics with shootability, this is the gun Taurus designed to answer that call. The Raging Hunter in .500 S&W brings all the proven features of the line—custom porting, a top-mounted Picatinny rail, a target-crowned barrel, and Taurus's dual-lockup cylinder system—to handle the substantial recoil of North America's most powerful production revolver cartridge.

This isn't a gun for plinking or casual range work. The .500 Magnum is a specialized round for backup defense on dangerous game hunts or as a primary arm for taking large dangerous animals. The 8.37" barrel gives you velocity and sight radius; the five-round capacity reflects the reality of the cartridge's power and the gun's design. Taurus engineered the Raging Hunter to manage what that much energy demands: a unfluted cylinder adds rotating mass to absorb recoil, custom barrel ports vent gases to reduce muzzle flip, and the cushioned grip maximizes contact area for control and comfort even through heavy recoil. The dual lockup system keeps the cylinder locked rock-solid under firing stresses that would make a lesser revolver fail.

The matte black oxide finish on the alloy steel frame and cylinder, paired with a matte stainless shroud with black anodized finish, gives the Raging Hunter a professional, no-nonsense look that suits its role. The fully adjustable rear sight and fixed front sight work with the Picatinny rail to let you mount optics or irons to your preference. If you're shopping for a .500 S&W revolver for serious hunting or backup defense in dangerous country, this Taurus delivers the power and thoughtful engineering the cartridge demands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the .500 S&W Magnum and what is it used for?

The .500 S&W Magnum is the most powerful production revolver cartridge. It is used primarily for hunting large dangerous game and dangerous animals, and as a backup defensive firearm in wilderness settings where maximum stopping power is essential. It is not a practical round for general range shooting or plinking.

Why does this revolver have custom barrel porting?

The custom porting vents expanding gases from the barrel to reduce felt recoil and muzzle flip—important features when shooting a cartridge as powerful as the .500 Magnum. The unfluted cylinder also adds rotating mass to help manage recoil impulse.

Can I mount a scope or optic on this revolver?

Yes. The Raging Hunter features a top-mounted Picatinny rail that allows you to mount optics, lasers, or other rail-compatible accessories. It also has a fully adjustable rear sight and fixed front sight for iron sight use.

Why does this revolver only hold 5 rounds?

The five-round capacity reflects the power and recoil of the .500 S&W Magnum cartridge. The revolver is engineered to handle the substantial pressures and impulses; capacity is traded for maximum power and reliability under the heaviest magnum loads.
