The Taurus Defender 856 T.O.R.O. is a 38 Special +P revolver built for shooters who want modern optics capability without sacrificing the reliability of a classic wheelgun. This stainless steel 6-round revolver pairs a proven 3-inch barrel platform with Taurus's T.O.R.O. optics-ready system—a factory-installed mounting solution that accepts compact red dot sights on the Holosun K-footprint. It's a straightforward answer for defensive shooters and target enthusiasts who want the option to run a dot sight on a small-frame revolver.

The 856 T.O.R.O. keeps what works about the standard Defender model: high-visibility night sights, a smooth double-action/single-action trigger tuned for quick, accurate fire, and a compact grip designed to reduce recoil and aid concealment. The stainless steel construction throughout—frame, cylinder, and barrel—delivers durability and a clean, professional look. The extended ejector rod makes reloading faster, and the 3-inch barrel is the sweet spot for wringing maximum velocity out of 38 Special +P loads while staying manageable in everyday carry or home defense roles.

This is a revolver for users who prefer mechanical simplicity and the predictability of a manually-operated cylinder but want the targeting advantage a red dot sight brings to modern shooting. Whether you're training at distance, shooting defensive drills, or carrying for personal protection, the T.O.R.O. system lets you upgrade your sight picture without changing revolvers. Just note that the optic itself is not included—you'll source a compatible Holosun K-footprint sight separately to complete the build.

Frequently Asked Questions

What red dot sights will fit the Taurus 856 T.O.R.O.?

The T.O.R.O. optics-ready system is compatible with compact red dot sights that use the Holosun K-footprint. This footprint accommodates a range of compact modern optics designed for small-frame pistols and revolvers. The sight itself is not included with the revolver, so you'll select and purchase your preferred optic separately.

Is the 856 T.O.R.O. suitable for everyday carry and home defense?

Yes. The compact grip, 3-inch barrel, and 23.5 oz unloaded weight make it manageable for carry. The 6-round 38 Special +P capacity and high-visibility night sights support defensive use, and the option to add a red dot sight improves targeting capability for both defense and training scenarios.

What's included with the revolver?

The revolver is supplied as a complete, ready-to-shoot firearm with high-visibility night sights and an extended ejector rod. The red dot optic is not included and must be purchased separately.

How does the 3-inch barrel perform with 38 Special +P ammunition?

The 3-inch barrel is optimized to deliver strong performance from 38 Special +P loads—this is the effective balance point between barrel length and the velocity gain available from this cartridge. A longer barrel would yield slightly more velocity, but at the cost of increased size and weight; shorter barrels sacrifice some of the velocity advantage the +P designation offers.
