The Taurus 856 UL is a lightweight .38 Special revolver built for concealed carry and backup duty. With a 2-inch barrel, aluminum frame, and just 16 ounces unloaded, this compact six-shooter prioritizes portability without sacrificing shootability. The 856 UL handles .38 Special and .38 Special +P ammunition, giving you flexibility in load selection while keeping the gun slim enough for waistband, ankle, or deep-pocket carry. Double/single-action operation means you get the safety of a heavier first trigger press in DA mode or faster follow-ups in single-action—your choice depending on the situation.

Taurus engineered the 856 UL around real defensive needs. The aluminum frame reduces weight considerably compared to steel-frame alternatives, while the carbon steel barrel and cylinder provide the durability you need for regular practice and reliable ignition. The transfer bar safety prevents accidental discharge if the gun is dropped, a critical feature for any carry revolver. Simple fixed sights—a serrated ramp up front and fixed notch in back—get out of the way and keep the profile low, ideal for IWB or pocket carry.

At 6.55 inches overall length and just 1.41 inches wide, the 856 UL fits where semi-autos can't, and its six-round capacity gives you reasonable ammunition before reloading. Revolver reliability and simplicity appeal to shooters who prefer mechanical action over springs and slides. This is a no-fuss defensive revolver for those who've earned their wheelgun credentials and want a trusted partner that rides light and shoots straight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Taurus 856 UL suitable for concealed carry?

Yes. At 16 ounces and just 1.41 inches wide, the 856 UL is designed for everyday concealed carry in an IWB holster, ankle rig, or jacket pocket. The compact 2-inch barrel and low overall profile make it one of the lightest defensive revolvers available.

Can I shoot .38 Special +P ammunition in this revolver?

Yes, the 856 UL is rated for both standard .38 Special and .38 Special +P ammunition, giving you flexibility in ammunition selection for practice or defensive loads.

What's the sight system on the 856 UL?

The revolver features a serrated ramp front sight and fixed notch rear sight. These are simple, low-profile fixed sights suitable for defensive distances and keep the gun's silhouette minimal for carry.

Is the 856 UL a safe revolver to carry?

Yes. The 856 UL includes a transfer bar safety that prevents firing if the gun is dropped or struck, even if the hammer is cocked. The double-action trigger mode also provides an additional safety layer with its longer, heavier first press.
