Savage 42 Takedown Compact .22LR/.410GA 20" Barrel with Carry Bag
- Caliber-Gauge:
- 22 Long Rifle
- Barrel Length Range:
- 20" to 21.99"
The Savage 42 Takedown Compact is a two-in-one rifle and shotgun combination gun built for hunters and shooters who want versatility without hauling two firearms. This break-open .22LR/.410GA combo swaps barrels, letting you switch between .22 Long Rifle for small game and precision work and .410 gauge shotgun for birds and larger quarry. At just 20 inches of barrel and 34.75 inches overall, it's nimble in brush and timber, and at 6 pounds it won't wear you out on a long day afield. The Takedown design means you can break it down for storage, transport, or the included carry bag—handy for hunters, overlanders, and anyone who moves between different hunting seasons and game.
The synthetic stock and matte-black finish resist weather and don't require babying. Two-round capacity keeps things simple and legal in most hunting scenarios. Adjustable sights let you dial in your zero for either caliber, and the break-open action is straightforward, reliable, and easy to maintain in the field. This is a true utility gun: no tactical clutter, no unnecessary complexity, just a compact platform that does two jobs well.
Whether you're a young hunter stepping up from .22 rimfire, an experienced hand pruning your battery, or someone building an overlanding kit that covers small game and upland birds, the Savage 42 Takedown delivers practical two-caliber performance in a carry-friendly package.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use both calibers in the same trip?
Yes. The Savage 42 Takedown is designed as a true combo gun—you can load .22LR in the rifle barrel and .410 shot in the shotgun barrel simultaneously. The break-open action lets you fire either one independently, giving you flexibility to switch game or tactics without a magazine change or reload.
What's included with the rifle?
The Savage 42 Takedown comes with a carry bag, which helps protect the firearm during transport and storage. The takedown design allows you to break the rifle down for compact carrying or packing.
Is this rifle good for hunting small game and upland birds?
Yes. The .22LR barrel handles rabbits, squirrels, and other small game, while the .410 shotgun barrel is effective on upland birds and smaller game birds. The 20-inch compact barrel makes it maneuverable in brush and timber where many small-game and upland hunts happen.
How do the adjustable sights work with two different calibers?
The sights are adjustable, allowing you to dial in the zero for either caliber. Since the barrels are separate, you can dial the sights to suit the impact point of each barrel independently.
