The Savage Model 42 Takedown is a nimble, go-anywhere rifle that flips between .22 Magnum and .410 shotgun in seconds—no tools required. That dual-caliber versatility makes it an honest all-purpose .22 Mag/.410 gauge rifle for small-game hunters, pest control, and shooters who want one takedown rifle to handle rabbits, squirrels, and upland birds without swapping guns. At 6.1 lbs with a 20-inch barrel, it's light enough to pack into brush or toss in your truck, and the included carry bag keeps it protected and ready for whatever the day brings.
The takedown action is Savage's calling card—barrel and action separate cleanly for compact transport or storage, and reassemble with zero zero shift. That matters whether you're hiking into remote country, loading a travel case, or just keeping things tidy at home. The single-shot design (one round at a time) means you're deliberate with each trigger press, which most shooters find suits the caliber's natural rhythm anyway. Twenty inches of barrel gives you respectable velocity from .22 Mag's snappy rounds while keeping the gun maneuverable in tight cover.
Black synthetic furniture resists weather and abuse, so this rifle doesn't care if it gets wet or dinged in the field. Whether you're a small-game stalker, a versatile pest hunter, or someone who appreciates the simplicity and cleverness of a two-caliber takedown design, the Savage 42 delivers no-nonsense reliability in a package that goes where you go.

Yes. The takedown barrel assembly swaps without tools, and the gun reassembles in seconds. No zero shift or complicated steps—Savage's design is intentionally simple and field-friendly.
Is this rifle good for hunting small game and upland birds?
Absolutely. The .22 Magnum barrel handles rabbits and squirrels with clean efficiency, while the .410 shotgun barrel covers upland birds and gives you shot pellet spread for moving targets. One rifle covers both roles.
What's the weight and how portable is it?
At 6.1 lbs and 35.75 inches overall, it's light and compact. The included carry bag makes it easy to pack into a truck, a day pack, or a safe. The takedown design makes it genuinely travel-friendly.
Is this a single-shot rifle?
Yes, the Model 42 is a single-shot, break-action design. Load one round, take your shot, reload. That deliberate rhythm suits small-game hunting and pest control work.
