The Savage 25 Walking Varminter in .223 Rem is a purpose-built bolt-action rifle that bridges the gap between a nimble field rifle and a serious varmint gun. If you spend time glassing prairie dog towns, culling coyotes, or punching paper at distance, this model delivers accuracy and portability without the bulk of a dedicated target rig. The 1:9 twist rate is optimized for .223 performance, and the 22-inch barrel balances velocity with a compact, manageable profile—important when you're hiking rough country or working from a vehicle.

The black synthetic stock is durable, weather-resistant, and dead-simple to maintain. No wood to worry about swelling or shifting; grab it wet or dry and get on with the hunt. At 6.9 pounds, it won't wear you out on a long walk, yet the rifle's inherent mass helps tame recoil and aids shooting consistency from field positions. The matte black finish blends practicality with a clean, no-nonsense look that suits the working hunter.

Capacity is limited to 4 rounds, which keeps things honest for varmint work—quick, deliberate shots are part of the discipline. The overall length of 41.75 inches makes it easy to maneuver through trucks, blinds, and brushy approach routes. Whether you're new to centerfire rifles or adding a proven .223 to your battery, the Savage 25 Walking Varminter gives you the bones of a reliable, accurate platform without complications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Savage 25 Walking Varminter good for hunting coyotes and prairie dogs?

Absolutely. The .223 Rem cartridge is a natural fit for varmint work, and the 1:9 twist is tuned for common .223 loads used on predators and small game. The compact, lightweight profile makes it well-suited for mobile hunting—walking fields, working from a truck, or setting up in a blind. Accuracy out of the box is typical of Savage's reputation in that segment.

What's the difference between the 1:9 twist rate and other twists I might see?

Twist rate determines which bullet weights a barrel likes best. The 1:9 twist (one full rotation per 9 inches of barrel) is the standard for .223 Rem and stabilizes the bullets most commonly loaded in that caliber. It's not a limitation—it's the right match for the cartridge.

Will this rifle fit in a compact rifle case or truck rack?

At 41.75 inches overall length and 6.9 pounds, the Savage 25 Walking Varminter is quite portable. It should fit most standard soft cases and vehicle racks designed for full-size rifles. For tight spaces, confirm dimensions with your specific storage solution.

Can I mount an optic on this rifle?

The Savage 25 is a bolt-action rifle, and Savage's standard models are designed to accept standard rifle scope mounts. We recommend confirming mount compatibility and rail options directly—some models ship with a picatinny rail or pre-drilled receiver, while others may not. Check the specific listing or ask us before purchasing if scope mounting is critical to your setup.
