The Pedersoli 1874 Sharps Q Down Under is a historically inspired .45-70 Government rifle built for shooters who appreciate authentic American rifle heritage and practical long-range performance. This isn't a safe queen—it's a working rifle descended from the legendary cavalry carbines that defined the era of Western expansion and marked buffalo hunts across the Great Plains. At 34 inches, the barrel strikes a balance between velocity and handling, making it equally at home on the bench or carried in the field.

Pedersoli builds this rifle around a set trigger mechanism, giving you the control and precision expected from a rifle designed for serious shooting. The action cycles with the deliberate, mechanical satisfaction that blackpowder cartridge rifle shooters chase. The walnut furniture—both stock and forend—is checkered and oil-finished, with a German silver cap that echoes the original cavalry styling, including the patchbox and saddle ring. These aren't cosmetic flourishes; they're functional details that connect you to 150 years of rifle tradition.

The .45-70 Government chambering delivers substantial power suitable for large game and long-range target work, especially when loaded appropriately for a rifle of this type. A six-groove bore with 1:18 twist rate supports the heavy, large-diameter bullets the cartridge was designed to fire, and the overall length of just over 50 inches keeps the rifle reasonably maneuverable despite the long barrel. This is a rifle for hunters and shooters willing to learn the manual of arms: single-shot precision, deliberate aim, and the unforgiving feedback of big-bore rifle shooting.

If you're drawn to period-correct rifles, historical shooting disciplines, or simply want a rifle that demands real skill and attention, the Pedersoli 1874 Sharps rewards that commitment with authentic mechanics and honest performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Pedersoli 1874 Sharps different from modern bolt-action rifles?

The Sharps is a single-shot rifle with a falling-block action operated by an external lever—mechanically simple and historically authentic. There's no magazine, no modern ergonomics, and no room for error. This rifle requires intentional shooting: careful aim, controlled breathing, and respect for the cartridge. Many shooters find that deliberate process more satisfying than rapid-fire capability.

Is this rifle suitable for hunting large game?

The .45-70 Government is a capable cartridge with a long history of taking large game. The 34-inch barrel and six-groove bore are designed to work with the heavy projectiles and velocities the cartridge delivers. Hunting applications depend on the specific load used and compliance with local regulations—always verify what's legal for your area and game.

What's the purpose of the set trigger?

A set trigger allows you to pre-tension the trigger mechanism to a lighter pull weight, improving accuracy and control during aimed shooting. You can also fire the rifle with the trigger in the unset position for a heavier, single-stage pull if preferred.

Does this rifle come with ammunition or loading data?

No ammunition is included. The .45-70 Government is widely available from ammunition manufacturers, though shooters often handload for this cartridge to optimize performance. Consult published reloading manuals and manufacturer guidelines appropriate to your specific rifle before loading.
