The Mossberg 940 12-gauge hunting shotgun is a gas-operated autoloader designed for hunters who need a reliable, low-maintenance workhorse. This 18.5" barrel model in Mossberg Greenleaf Camo combines a hard-running gas system with field-proven ergonomics and smart details that make it equally at home in a turkey blind or hunting waterfowl. The 4-round capacity, corrosion-resistant internals, and shooter-friendly controls make it a practical choice for serious hunters who value uptime over fuss.

At the heart of the 940 is a gas-operated system engineered for extended cleaning intervals—the gun will cycle reliably for up to 1500 rounds between routine maintenance. That reliability comes from nickel boron-coated internal components (gas piston, magazine tube, hammer, and sear) that shrug off moisture and fouling. The receiver is cut to accept low-profile direct-mount optics in Shield RMSc pattern, so if you want to add a quality dot sight, the mechanical work is already done. The enlarged and beveled loading port speeds reloading under pressure, and the anodized orange follower and elongated elevator keep the action running smooth.

In the hand, the 940 feels built for actual hunting. Mossberg's signature texturing on the grip and slim forend gives you purchase in wet or gloved conditions. The self-draining adjustable stock lets you dial in length of pull within a 1.25" range using included shims—a genuine convenience if you shoot with different clothing weights or hand off the gun. It ships with a HiViz CompSight fiber optic front sight and an X-Factor ported, extended turkey choke tube. The charging handle is oversized and easy to manipulate, and the bolt release sits where you expect it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Mossberg 940 hunting shotgun optic-ready?

Yes. The receiver comes with cuts milled for low-profile direct mounting of Shield RMSc-pattern micro dot sights. This means you can mount a compatible red dot without any guesswork or additional gunsmithing.

What's included with the 940, and what comes on the gun?

The shotgun ships with a HiViz CompSight fiber optic front sight and an X-Factor ported, extended turkey choke tube already installed. The adjustable stock includes shims to dial in your preferred length of pull.

How often do I need to clean a gas-operated 12-gauge?

The 940's redesigned gas system is rated for up to 1500 rounds between cleanings, which means significantly less frequent maintenance than many competing autoloaders. Corrosion-resistant coatings on the gas piston, magazine tube, and other internal parts help extend that interval in wet or harsh conditions.

Can I use the stock on this 940 with different clothing or shooting positions?

Yes. The self-draining adjustable stock allows you to change length of pull by up to 1.25" using included shims, so you can tailor fit for different loads, clothing, or shooting scenarios without buying a replacement stock.
