The Mossberg 500 Youth Bantam Field/Deer Combo 20-gauge pump shotgun is purpose-built for younger shooters, smaller-framed hunters, and anyone new to shotguns who needs a reliable, manageable platform to learn and hunt. This 3-inch chambered pump-action shotgun comes with two barrels—a 22-inch field barrel and a 24-inch deer barrel—giving you genuine versatility without buying a second gun. The 20-gauge recoil is gentler than 12-gauge, making this an honest entry point for upland game, small game, and deer hunting without the flinch factor that discourages new shooters.

The Mossberg 500 name carries real weight in the shotgun world. This isn't a budget compromise; it's a proven platform trusted by hunters, sport shooters, and law enforcement for decades. The Bantam designation means the dimensions—stock length, grip, overall handling—are scaled to fit smaller hands and frames comfortably. You get the same mechanical reliability and safety engineering as the full-size 500, just in proportions that make sense for your build. The dual-barrel combo solves the eternal beginner's dilemma: do I buy a shotgun for hunting, or for the range? You don't have to choose.

Practicality is the Mossberg design philosophy. The pump action is smooth, the controls are intuitive, and maintenance is straightforward. Whether you're breaking in a young hunter, adding a dedicated 20-gauge to your cabinet, or building your first shotgun battery, the field/deer barrel combo gives you real hunting flexibility without the complexity or cost of separate guns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the recoil like on a 20-gauge compared to a 12-gauge?

The 20-gauge produces noticeably less recoil than a 12-gauge, making it gentler on your shoulder and less likely to cause flinching—especially important for younger shooters or anyone building shotgun confidence. You retain effective hunting and sport shooting capability without the extra punishment.

Can I use both barrels that come with this combo?

Yes. The package includes both a 22-inch field barrel and a 24-inch deer barrel, so you can swap them depending on your hunting situation. This gives you genuine versatility in a single shotgun platform.

Is the Youth Bantam frame really smaller, or is it just a different stock?

The entire Youth Bantam is dimensionally scaled for smaller frames—proportions matter for fit, comfort, and control. The scaled frame and stock are designed so younger shooters and smaller adults can handle the gun naturally.

What is this shotgun suitable for?

The 20-gauge Mossberg 500 is effective for upland game, small game, and deer hunting. The dual-barrel combo lets you optimize barrel length for your specific hunting or range use without buying separate guns.
