The Mossberg 500SP is a 12-gauge shotgun built on the platform that's earned trust in law enforcement, home defense, and hunting for decades. This model pairs that proven reliability with walnut furniture—a stock and forend finished in natural wood—and a richly blued metal finish that gives it classic appeal without sacrificing practical capability. At 18 inches, the barrel keeps the overall length compact at 39.5 inches, making it manageable in tight spaces while staying ready for serious work. It weighs 6.75 pounds, a straightforward, no-nonsense gun that won't wear you down whether you're securing your home or working through a shotgun course.

The 500SP feeds from an under-barrel tube magazine and holds six shells total—five in the magazine plus one in the chamber—giving you a practical load-out without excessive bulk. The barrel is cylinder-bored and topped with a brass-bead front sight, a simple, proven sighting system that works in low light and at close quarters. There's no rail clutter or tactical accessories here; it's a straightforward, classic shotgun design that does the job it was designed for.

Whether you're interested in a home-defense shotgun, a compact hunting gun, or a reliable platform you can actually operate intuitively, the Mossberg 500SP delivers the durability and reputation of the 500 line in a configuration that respects the heritage of the gun while keeping modern capability in mind. It's the kind of shotgun that works because it's simple, and simple works.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Mossberg 500SP best used for?

The 18-inch barrel and 6-shot capacity make this shotgun well-suited for home defense, close-quarters work, and hunting in brush or tight cover. The compact length and moderate weight keep it manageable in confined spaces while maintaining enough firepower for practical applications.

Can I add accessories to the Mossberg 500SP?

The Mossberg 500 platform is highly modular; barrels, stocks, and magazines are interchangeable across the 500 line. However, the specs provided here cover only the base gun as shipped. Check compatibility with aftermarket components before purchasing.

What does cylinder-bore mean?

A cylinder-bore barrel has no constriction—the bore diameter remains consistent from chamber to muzzle. This gives a wide, even pattern suitable for close-range defense and hunting, and it's also the simplest, most durable choke configuration.

How much ammunition does it hold?

The under-barrel tube magazine holds 5 rounds, and the chamber holds 1, for a total capacity of 6 shells.
