The Henry Repeating Arms Goldenboy .17 HMR lever action rifle brings timeless American gunmaking to small-game hunting and varmint control. Built around the iconic Henry platform, this Model H004VL combines the smooth, satisfying action of a lever gun with the flat-shooting ballistics of the .17 HMR cartridge—a caliber that delivers precision on targets from squirrels to prairie dogs without excessive noise or recoil. If you appreciate classic rifle handling and want a compact, nimble shooter that's genuinely fun at the range or in the field, the Goldenboy delivers.

What sets this rifle apart is the large loop lever design, purpose-built for shooters with bigger hands or those running the gun in cold-weather gear where gloves are necessary. The loop geometry also nods to traditional western styling, so aesthetics and ergonomics work together here. Topped with adjustable buckhorn rear and beaded front sights, the Goldenboy is ready to hunt right out of the box—no rail cuts, no optics required, just straightforward sight picture.

The 20-inch barrel keeps the overall length to a handy 38.5 inches, making the rifle nimble in brush or from a vehicle, while the 12-round magazine capacity means less loading and more shooting. The American walnut furniture and brass-accented receiver—including the Brasslite receiver, Brasslite barrel band, and brass buttplate—give the rifle a warm, classic look that doesn't scream for attention. At 6.75 pounds, it won't wear you down during a long day of walking and glassing, and the blued barrel resists rust under normal field conditions.

The .17 HMR is a serious small-caliber cartridge: fast, flat, and inherently accurate. For hunters, it's a natural fit for varmints and small game where a .22 Long Rifle might be underpowered. The lever action delivers quick follow-up shots, and the trigger—a Henry hallmark—breaks cleanly to let you shoot your best. Build quality is excellent throughout; Henry has earned its reputation for consistency and fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Goldenboy .17 HMR good for hunting small game and varmints?

Yes. The .17 HMR is a proven cartridge for small game and varmint hunting—squirrels, rabbits, prairie dogs, and similar targets. It's faster and flatter than a .22 Long Rifle and much quieter than centerfire calibers, making it ideal for areas where noise is a concern. The Goldenboy's light recoil and short length make it a natural field companion.

What makes the large loop lever different?

The oversized loop on the lever is designed to accommodate shooters with larger hands, and it's especially useful when wearing heavy gloves in winter. The extra room gives you more leverage and control, and the design also adds traditional western style to the rifle's profile.

Does the rifle come with optics or rail mounts?

No. The Goldenboy ships with factory adjustable buckhorn rear and beaded front sights. There are no rail cuts or mounting provisions for optics, so it's set up for traditional sight picture. Many hunters run it as-is; if you want to add optics later, you'll need to explore aftermarket mounting solutions.
