The Winchester XPR in 400 Legend is a modern hunting rifle built on a no-nonsense platform that delivers dependable accuracy without the frills or the cost. If you're considering one of Winchester's SHOT Show special calibers for medium-game hunting or want to explore the 400 Legend's ballistics in a purpose-built rifle, the XPR Ns 400L pairs a straightforward bolt-action design with field-proven engineering that hunters have come to trust from Winchester's XPR line.
What makes this rifle work is its attention to the fundamentals. The bolt is machined from chrome-moly steel bar stock and treated with a nickel Teflon coating that resists corrosion and cycles smoothly through brass and polymer. The receiver is solid steel, not cast, and the free-floated barrel is button-rifled and capped with a recessed target crown—details that matter for consistent shot placement. The two-position thumb safety is intuitive, and the M.O.A. trigger system keeps you in control whether you're sitting at the bench or in the field. A steel recoil lug absorbs impact properly, and the Inflex Technology recoil pad manages what the 400 Legend generates, keeping your shoulder happy during practice.
The rifle ships with a detachable box magazine for fast reloads and wears a matte blue finish over a black polymer stock—hard-wearing, low-maintenance surfaces that don't demand babying. The bolt unlock button is nicely placed for one-handed operation. This is straightforward hunting-rifle architecture: no rail bolted to the receiver, no proprietary features that complicate bedding or optic mounting, just a rifle that will hold zero and keep working.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 400 Legend and why choose it?
The 400 Legend is one of Winchester's SHOT Show special calibers, designed as a modern straight-wall option. It sits between traditional lever-gun cartridges and modern rifle rounds, making it relevant in certain hunting regulations and offering distinct ballistic characteristics. Check your local hunting regs to confirm it's legal in your area and game.
Does the XPR come with an optic or rails for mounting?
No optic is included. The receiver is drilled and tapped for standard scope mounting, but rings, bases, and an optic are sold separately. The XPR does not feature a factory-installed Picatinny rail; mounting follows traditional rifle architecture.
What's included in the box?
The rifle ships with a detachable box magazine. You will need to acquire a scope mounting solution, ammunition, and any other accessories separately.
How does the M.O.A. Trigger System perform?
The M.O.A. Trigger System is designed to offer clean, predictable trigger breaks. Exact pull weight and adjustability specs aren't documented here; if those details matter for your use, contact us directly for specifics or test one in person.
