- Caliber-Gauge:
- 38-55 Winchester
The Winchester 94 Short Rifle in 38-55 Winchester is a compact, fast-handling lever-action built for hunters and shooters who value quick target acquisition and classic lines. With its 20-inch round barrel and straight-grip walnut stock, this rifle delivers the soul of an American workhorse—the kind of gun that earned its reputation in the saddle and at the range. Weighing just 6 pounds 12 ounces, it's light enough to carry all day without fatigue, yet substantial enough to shoot comfortably from bench or field position.
The 38-55 Winchester cartridge sits in a sweet spot for hunters pursuing medium game and varmints. This rifle feeds from a 7-round magazine and cycles with smooth, reliable lever action thanks to Winchester's round locking bolt trunnions and radiused lever edges that protect your hand. The action is drilled and tapped for scope mounts, so you can mount optics if your hunting situation calls for them—or stick with the included sights and enjoy the pure, unmagnified experience this rifle was designed for.
Aesthetically and mechanically, Winchester didn't compromise. The satin-finished walnut stock has authentic straight-grip styling with a blued steel forearm cap, while traditional Marble Arms sights (gold bead front, adjustable semi-buckhorn rear) keep things honest and honest-looking. The shotgun-style buttplate shoulders smoothly, the top-tang safety is intuitive, and the rebounding hammer adds a margin of safety. A knurled hammer spur extension is included and pre-drilled into the hammer—essential if you plan to run a scope and need clearance for thumb cocking.
If you grew up with lever guns or simply respect the simplicity and speed they offer, the Winchester 94 Short Rifle is a rifle that works as well today as its predecessors did a century ago.
