The Winchester 70 Extreme Hunter in .308 Winchester with a 22-inch barrel is a modernized take on the legendary Model 70 bolt-action rifle, purpose-built for hunters who demand performance in tough conditions. This rifle pairs Winchester's proven pre-'64 controlled-feed action with a free-floating, fluted sporter-weight barrel and protective FDE Cerakote finish on the barreled action—a combination that handles weather, recoil, and the demands of serious hunts without compromise. If you're looking for a .308 hunting rifle that combines proven accuracy with real durability, the Extreme Hunter delivers the goods.

The stock is where this rifle shows its modern side. A Bell and Carlson synthetic chassis with a sculpted cheekpiece and TrueTimber Strata camouflage finish keeps things lightweight and moisture-proof—no wood to warp or swell in wet conditions. The Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad absorbs felt recoil, making follow-up shots faster and easier. You'll notice details like the jeweled bolt body and knurled bolt handle, features that speak to Winchester's attention to fit and function at the mechanics level.

The action houses Winchester's M.O.A. Trigger System and a three-position safety, while the controlled round feed and ejection system—hallmarks of the pre-'64 design—run like clockwork. A hinged floorplate allows quick magazine access, and sling swivel studs come standard for attaching your favorite carry rig. The 22-inch barrel strikes a balance between velocity and handling, making this rifle nimble in thick brush yet capable at distance.

The .308 Winchester remains one of hunting's most versatile cartridges, with factory ammo and hand-loading components everywhere. In the Extreme Hunter's capable hands, it's equally at home on whitetail, elk, or prairie game. This is a rifle built to be used hard and still perform when it matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the .308 Winchester good for in hunting?

The .308 is one of hunting's most capable and versatile cartridges, effective on deer, elk, and other big game at reasonable hunting distances. Factory ammunition is widely available everywhere, and reloading components are easy to find. It's also flat-shooting enough for prairie and open-country hunting without excessive wind drift.

Does the muzzle brake reduce recoil?

Yes—the muzzle brake on this rifle helps manage recoil and can assist with blast management. The Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad on the stock works in tandem to reduce felt recoil, making follow-up shots easier and more comfortable to shoot.

Is the synthetic stock really better than wood for hunting?

For tough, wet conditions and rugged hunts, synthetic stocks have real advantages. The Bell and Carlson stock on this Extreme Hunter won't swell, warp, or absorb moisture like wood can, and the TrueTimber Strata finish provides effective camouflage. It's lighter and more stable in all weather.

What does the free-floating barrel do?

A free-floating barrel isn't constrained by the stock along its length, which allows it to vibrate consistently and produce tighter groups. This design, combined with the fluted sporter-weight profile, helps the Extreme Hunter achieve the accuracy hunters expect from a Winchester 70.
