The Winchester 1892 Short Rifle in .357 Mag is a lever-action rifle that bridges over a century of American gun-making heritage with modern-day handling. Built on John Browning's original 1892 design—one of the most successful lever guns ever made—this 20-inch barreled carbine delivers the smooth, compact performance that made the platform legendary. At just 6 pounds and 37.5 inches overall, it's nimble enough for brush hunting, cowboy action shooting, and ranch work, yet robust enough to handle the snap of .357 Mag with authority. The 1892 Short Rifle rewards shooters who value tradition, balance, and reliability over bells and whistles.

Winchester fitted this rifle with a classic two-piece look: a glossy black walnut stock paired with a satin-finished steel receiver and barrel. Up front sits a brass bead front sight, backed by a semi-buckhorn rear—authentic to the era and quick to acquire on close-range targets. The rifle includes a one-piece steel crescent buttplate, honoring the original design. An intuitive rear tang safety keeps your thumb in charge, and the action's dual vertical locking lugs deliver the same strength and durability that made the 1892 Winchester's rifle of choice for working hunters for generations. The 1:18.75 inch twist stabilizes .357 Mag projectiles and the magazine holds 10 rounds—practical capacity without bulk.

The .357 Mag caliber is a smart choice for versatile shooting: it'll handle hunting tasks in close quarters, feed reliable ammunition from common reloading stocks, and feel forgiving in a lightweight rifle. The 1892's fame rests on its low recoil, light weight, and quick handling—qualities that matter when the game is close and the shooting is offhand. This isn't a safe queen; it's built to be used, cleaned, and passed down.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Winchester 1892 Short Rifle .357 Mag a good hunting rifle?

Yes. The .357 Mag cartridge is suitable for hunting in brush and thick cover, and the 1892's lightweight, quick-handling profile makes it ideal for close-range work where speed matters. The short 20-inch barrel and 6-pound weight make it easy to carry and maneuver in the field.

Can I add a scope or tang sight to this rifle?

The rifle comes with a rear tang safety, and manufacturers like Marbles make tang sights designed to fit the 1892 platform, so aftermarket options are available if you want to upgrade sighting equipment. We recommend consulting with a gunsmith for any modifications.

What's included with the rifle?

The rifle ships as a complete firearm with sights installed: brass bead front and semi-buckhorn rear, rear tang safety, and one-piece steel crescent buttplate. It does not include ammunition or accessories beyond what is factory-fitted.

Is the 1892 Short Rifle suitable for cowboy action shooting?

Absolutely. The .357 Mag caliber and classic lever-action platform make it a popular choice for cowboy action events, where its smooth action, balanced weight, and traditional appearance are valued.
