The Rock Island 51417 GI Standard is a CA-compliant .45 ACP pistol built on the proven 1911 platform that defined American combat handguns for over a century. If you want a straightforward, reliable sidearm without modern tactical frills—whether for home defense, range shooting, or simply carrying a gun that respects its heritage—this Rock Island delivers classic 1911 performance in a configuration legal in California. The 4.25" barrel keeps the gun compact enough for quick-draw use while maintaining the weight distribution and handling characteristics the original design became famous for.
Rock Island Armory engineered this GI Standard to capture what made the original issue 1911 work: a slim profile, fixed low-profile sights, and no-nonsense ergonomics. The smooth wood grips feel solid in your hand without bulk, and the parkerized finish on both slide and frame delivers that durable, matte-black military look that doesn't shine in low light. The trigger breaks between 4 and 6 pounds—crisp enough to shoot well out of the box without the unpredictability of a poorly tuned action.
With 8+1 capacity (.45 ACP round in the chamber, seven in the magazine), you get the stopping power the cartridge has carried since WWI. The gun weighs 2.36 pounds unloaded—substantial enough to manage recoil without being a burden. This is a 1911 that doesn't ask you to pay premium money for features you don't need or that don't work in CA. Straight-shooting, honest, and compliant.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this pistol legal in California?
Yes. The Rock Island 51417 is sold as CA-compliant, meaning it meets the legal requirements to own and carry in California, including fixed sights (no adjustable rear sight) and other state-mandated features.
What kind of ammunition does it use?
.45 ACP. The gun holds 8 rounds in the magazine plus 1 in the chamber for 8+1 total capacity.
How does the parkerized finish hold up?
Parkerized is a military-grade finish applied to both the slide and frame. It's durable and resists reflection in low light, though it's not as corrosion-resistant as modern treatments like stainless or cerakote. Like any steel gun, it should be cleaned and lightly oiled after shooting and stored in a dry location.
Is this gun suitable for a new 1911 shooter?
Yes. The 4- to 6-pound trigger is crisp and predictable, the fixed sights are reliable and simple to use, and the 4.25" barrel balances recoil with accuracy. If you're new to the 1911 platform, this Rock Island gives you honest 1911 fundamentals without unnecessary complexity.
