The PTR-91 A3S 109 is a .308 Winchester rifle built on the proven roller-lock delayed blowback system that's earned respect among precision rifle shooters and serious hunters for decades. This 18-inch rifle delivers the power of full-power rifle cartridges in a compact, maneuverable package ideal for hunting, tactical training, and range work where a shorter sight radius and reduced overall length matter. With a match-grade H&K profile tapered barrel, quality trigger group housing, and a factory-welded scope mount, the A3S 109 gives you a reliable platform without the assembly hassle.

Built around German roller-lock engineering rather than traditional direct impingement, the PTR-91 A3S operates with a fundamentally different—and for many shooters, preferable—action philosophy. The delayed blowback system is renowned for reliability under harsh conditions and consistent performance. At 10 pounds and 40.5 inches overall, this rifle balances firepower with portability, making it equally at home in a hunting blind or on the range. The 20-round magazine gives you serious capacity for follow-up shots or training sessions.

The A3S 109 features a black powdercoat finish that resists corrosion, a fixed polymer stock for stability, and a slim-profile polymer handguard that won't heat up during extended shooting. The HK Navy-type flash hider rounds out the package with effective muzzle flash reduction. As of 2015, this rifle ships with 5/8x24 barrel threading, a standard that opens up aftermarket suppressor and muzzle device options if you want to build on the platform.

Whether you're drawn to the roller-lock system's heritage, need a compact .308 for hunting or training, or appreciate rifle engineering that doesn't follow the AR platform trend, the PTR-91 A3S 109 is a serious choice backed by proven design.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the roller-lock system different from an AR-15 or AR-10 platform?

The PTR-91 uses a delayed blowback roller-lock action, a German-engineered system distinct from the direct impingement (piston-like) design of most modern tactical rifles. This means the bolt carrier operates differently, the recoil impulse feels distinct, and many shooters report it runs very reliably under tough conditions. It's a proven design with a long track record—just not the AR platform you might be familiar with.

Will I need to buy an optic, or does the rifle come with a scope?

The PTR-91 A3S 109 includes a factory-welded scope mount but does not ship with an optic. You'll need to source and install your own riflescope or red dot to use that mount.

Is the 18-inch barrel long enough for .308 hunting at distance?

An 18-inch .308 barrel does lose velocity compared to longer barrels, but .308 Winchester remains effective for hunting and training at moderate range. Your muzzle velocity will be lower than a 20 or 24-inch barrel would produce, so factor that into ballistics planning. Many hunters and trainers run short-barreled .308s successfully—just understand the trade-offs in velocity for the gain in handling and portability.

Can I suppress the PTR-91 A3S 109?

The rifle comes with 5/8x24 barrel threading, a standard that's compatible with many commercial .308 suppressors. You'll need to source a suppressor separately and verify compatibility with your specific model, but the factory threading supports this option.
