The Aero Precision M4E1 5.56 NATO assembled upper receiver with 14.5" barrel is a fully built, mid-length gas system upper designed for shooters and builders who want quality components without the need to source every part separately. This upper comes ready to accept a bolt carrier group and charging handle—the two items most customizers prefer to choose themselves—making it ideal for finishing an AR build with your preferred internals or upgrading an existing rifle platform.

Built on Aero's forged M4E1 receiver, the upper maintains genuine mil-spec compatibility for bolts, carriers, and charging handles while combining the proven durability of forged aluminum with the refined appearance of a machined design. The included Gen 2 Enhanced M-LOK handguard is machined with textured flats that improve your grip and reduce snags on gear, while the full-length Picatinny top rail gives you unlimited optics mounting flexibility. QD sling attachment points are located at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions, letting you set up the rifle exactly how you want it.

The mid-length gas system is a smart choice for reliability and shot-to-shot consistency. By using a longer gas tube than standard carbine uppers, the mid-length system reduces gas velocity and cycling speed, which helps the rifle run reliably across a wide range of ammunition and suppressors without beating up the components. The 14.5" 4150 chrome-moly-vanadium barrel is rifled at 1-7" twist and wears a QPQ black finish for corrosion resistance. An A2-style flash suppressor is installed at 1/2"-28 threads; note that for civilian 14.5" builds, this muzzle device must be permanently pinned and welded to meet the 16" overall length requirement under federal law.

The M-LOK handguard features a 1.78" inner diameter, clearing most suppressor mounts and short muzzle devices. Ejection port cover and forward assist come installed. This upper is chambered in 5.56 NATO and will also safely fire .223 Remington ammunition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this upper compatible with standard AR-15 bolt carrier groups and charging handles?

Yes. The M4E1 receiver is forged and maintains full mil-spec compatibility with any standard AR-15 bolt carrier group and charging handle. This is one of the big reasons Aero designed it this way—so you can use the internals you prefer or already own.

Do I need to pin and weld the flash suppressor on this 14.5" upper?

Yes, for a civilian rifle build. The flash suppressor comes installed but not pinned or welded. Per the National Firearms Act, muzzle devices must be permanently attached to a 14.5" barrel to achieve the minimum 16" overall length required for a rifle. Have a gunsmith pin and weld it permanently, or consider the 16" barrel version if you want to keep the muzzle device removable.

What's the difference between this mid-length gas system and a standard carbine upper?

Mid-length gas systems use a longer gas tube than carbine systems, which reduces gas velocity during cycling. This slower, smoother operation improves reliability across different ammunition types and reduces wear on components. It's a genuine advantage for both suppressed and unsuppressed shooting.

Does the handguard work with suppressors?

The M-LOK handguard has a 1.78" inside diameter, which clears most muzzle devices and suppressors up to 1.5" in diameter. Larger suppressors may fit tightly or not at all, so check your specific suppressor dimensions.
