The Henry Big Boy Side Gate lever action rifle in .45 LC combines Old West aesthetics with practical modern convenience. This brass-finished rifle splits the difference between traditional lever-gun romance and real-world usability—the side-loading gate makes feeding rounds faster and less fussy than traditional top loading, while the polished hardened brass receiver and octagon barrel give it genuine cowboy-gun character. If you're drawn to lever actions for hunting, target work, or just because a quality .45 LC rifle belongs in your safe, this Henry delivers the goods without pretension.

The gun handles 10 rounds of .45 Colt ammunition and tips the scales at 8.68 pounds—comfortable for extended range sessions or a day in the field. The 20-inch octagon barrel wears a blued finish, and the American walnut furniture feels substantial in hand. Sights are practical too: a fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear with diamond insert up front pairs with a brass bead front sight, giving you a fighting chance at distance. If optics are your preference, the receiver is drilled and tapped for the BB-RSM scope mount, so modern glass isn't off the table.

This isn't a safe-queen poster rifle, though it'll look good in one. The transfer bar safety means you can carry it loaded with confidence, and the side gate means you're not fumbling to load from the top like it's 1895. The 14-inch length of pull and brass buttplate round out a rifle that respects its lineage while staying genuinely useful.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the side gate different from a traditional lever-action loading port?

Instead of loading rounds through the top of the receiver (which requires cycling the lever), the Big Boy's side gate lets you feed cartridges directly into the magazine tube from the side. It's faster, less clunky, and frankly more pleasant to use during extended shooting sessions or at the range.

Can I mount a scope on this rifle?

Yes. The receiver is drilled and tapped for the BB-RSM scope mount, so you can run optics if iron sights aren't your thing. The combo of brass finish and modern glass might look unconventional, but it works.

What's the length of pull, and will it fit me?

The length of pull is 14 inches, measured from the trigger to the center of the buttplate. That's standard for many lever-action rifles and should work for most adult shooters, though a shorter or taller shooter might want to handle one in person to confirm.

What safety features does this rifle have?

The Henry Big Boy Side Gate uses a transfer bar safety, which prevents the hammer from contacting the firing pin unless the trigger is fully pressed. This means the rifle can be safely carried fully loaded without risk of accidental discharge if dropped.
