The Faxon Arak-21 complete upper receiver in 5.56 with a 12.5" barrel brings short-barrel rifle capability to your AR-15 platform without replacing your lower. This gas piston upper drops onto any standard AR-15 lower receiver using only the existing take-down and pivot pins—no tools, no gunsmithing, installation takes under a minute. If you've been running a direct impingement rifle and want to experience the benefits of a short-stroke piston system in a compact package, the Arak-21 delivers that shift in a format that lets you keep your current lower intact.
Built from aircraft-grade 6061-T6 aluminum as a single-piece billet, the upper receiver incorporates a full-length top Mil-Std-1913 rail with laser-engraved optic placement marks and three additional picatinny rails at the muzzle end, giving you genuine quad-rail flexibility for mounting lights, grips, and other furniture. The included barrel assembly unit pairs the 12.5" barrel with a gas block, muzzle brake, long-stroke gas piston, and adjustable gas knob—the piston system offers three distinct gas flow settings for tuning to your ammunition and suppressors, plus a closed position for single-shot operation when needed. That modularity is the whole point: you're not locked into one gas tune.
The charging handle runs ambidextrous, non-reciprocating, and foldable, and shifts from side to side with zero tools. The bolt carrier rides on bolted hardened steel rails for smooth, predictable lockup and wear. Included in the box are the upper, charging handle, lower forearm with shims and rails, dual recoil spring system, bolt carrier assembly, and two Allen wrenches. This is a purpose-built short-barrel upper that plays well with folding stocks—the recoil system doesn't extend into the buffer tube area, so you can collapse without mechanical conflict.
