The Daniel Defense MK18 5.56mm upper receiver group with RIS II is a professional-grade short-barrel upper built on the same platform Daniel Defense supplies to USSOCOM. This is a complete upper—barrel, bolt carrier group, charging handle, handguard, and gas system included—ready to mate to any mil-spec lower receiver. At 10.3 inches, the barrel is purpose-built for close-quarters work and suppressed fire, making it a favorite among shooters running short-stroke setups and cans. If you're assembling a compact rifle, SBR, or pistol-caliber build and need a proven, combat-tested upper that won't nickel-and-dime you with missing components, the MK18 delivers.

The barrel is cold hammer forged from chrome moly vanadium steel with a 1:7 twist, chrome-lined bore, and mil-spec phosphate coating. That combination means reliable function and longevity whether you're running standard 5.56, heavier match rounds, or suppressed loads. The gas system uses a low-profile gas block and carbine-length tuning, direct impingement—a proven setup that pairs well with suppressors. Daniel Defense's own flash suppressor is welded on, finished in salt bath nitride for corrosion resistance.

What sets this upper apart is the GRIP-N-RIP charging handle and the RIS II handguard. The charging handle is truly ambidextrous, with anti-gas geometry designed to redirect blast upward and away from your face—meaningful if you run suppressed or if you're shooting left-handed. The RIS II rail system is the real deal: CNC-machined aluminum with a massive accessory footprint for lights, lasers, and optics. Santoprene rail covers come standard and handle heat up to 300 degrees. Everything here is American-made and built to mil-spec standards.

This is an upper, not a complete rifle. You'll need a lower receiver to go with it. Sights are sold separately. As always, confirm that any SBR configuration complies with federal NFA regulations and your local laws before building.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to complete this upper into a rifle?

This is an upper receiver group only. You'll need a mil-spec lower receiver to mate it to. You'll also want to source sights separately—the upper ships without iron sights or optics.

Is this upper compatible with suppressors?

Yes. The carbine-length gas system and GRIP-N-RIP charging handle are specifically designed to work well with suppressors. The charging handle's anti-gas geometry redirects gas upward and away from the shooter's face, which is helpful under suppressed fire.

Can left-handed shooters use this?

Yes. The GRIP-N-RIP charging handle is truly ambidextrous and works equally well for left- and right-handed operation.

What's included in the box?

The complete upper receiver group includes the barrel, bolt carrier group, charging handle, RIS II handguard with rail panels, gas block and tube, and flash suppressor. Sights are not included. You'll need to source a lower receiver separately.
